any idea where i could find designs or ideas? I've checked google for "headboards" and all i come up with retailers with lousey pictures. Anyone know of any place that might have some dxf designs available? There was a furniture parts seller who had dxf's available but that was just parts. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Jack: Define "ornate". Do you mean covered with various carvings so it looks like you built it out of Enkbol parts, or do you mean modern, or deco, or classic or neo-classic or baroque or...................?

hi Dave,
You know, i'm not sure what exactly i want. I guess what i'm more interested in the outside shapes (if that makes sense) than surface decorations.
My initial thoughts was more of a flat panel that i would carve the "celtic tree of life" in the center then around the outside of that the profiles of the kids. Then on the outsides i would have a spiral column with a square section where the headboard joins it.
I'm not familiar with some of the styles you mention above although i'm sure i've seen them and liked certain things but couldn't point ot something and say "thats baroque".
To give you an example, I love the kind of furniture you might see in old moves from the 30's &40's. Art Decco? Also if you're an Errol Flynn fan the style and furniture you might see in "Captain Blood" from the 1700's England.
What are "Enkbol" parts? Also I might see something cool and scrap all those ideas, so any suggestion or idea would be appreciated. I grew up in an old spooky house that was haunted that looked like a castle that was full of antiques.
thanks for your help.
Its "enkeboll"

HAHA sorry he is my idol..
About 8 years ago I went into my local molding shop to look around for architectural details for a mantel I was building and found enkeboll designs in a $2k lion mantel leg. I ran my hand over the carved head and acanthus felt every little detail, closed my eyes then basically brute forced my customers into buying it so I could create their mantel lol..
Ive been fascinated with all of enkeboll's stuff ever since. I cant get enough.

I'd look at the top half of sign border designs and incorporate something from them into your shape. Try a net search for Golden Studios, Letterhead clipart, sign shapes, etc. Hope this helps.

I was in fact just looking at some of my sign outines for inspiration, funny how great minds think alike, huh? The other things you mention I will check out, thanks for the tip!
Danny, you mentioned in another post about carving something and you were going to post some pics of it...well where are they? lol

Jack: If I were thinking of carving (or applying a relief) of the tree of life on a headboard I would probably give the top outline a cathedral arch and flank it with taller posts. Between the tree and the carvings of the kids, I wouldn't want to get too ornate about the shape as it may tend to distract from the design. One lesson from headboards is to make sure that your focal carvings are still visible when the bed is made and the pillows are on it!!
How about more of a free form tree growing from the middle, branching across the whole headboard, and having the portraits randomly placed like fruit. Don't you live in California? A walnut tree maybe?

Danny,
Thanks for the link. I never paid attention to the name though I'm sure I've seen his work around.
I can't believe they allow you to download for free hundreds of DXF files. This is the largest free collection of ornate DXF files I've ever seen. I've downloaded a few already and when I get time I will be downloading many more.
Jack, it you can't find what you want on that site it may not exist? LOL

The drawings may be free but if you ever need to order anything from them - be prepared to dig deep.

Dave, I like your ideas and I can start to visualize it from your description which makes a lot of sense. I thought of the celtic tree of life because of its meaning and if that was the only thing on it, that would be a nice carving but visually with the kids pics it would look like a circle in the center with circles around it and visually wouldn't be that great. Whereas the big OAK tree with branches bearing the fruit of reproduction (the kids) would be neater. Thats a GREAT idea (i'm glad I thought of it) lol. But wait a minute oak tree bear Nuts...oh well thats appropriate in my case. I'm going to look for some type of picture or whatever of a big branched type of tree. Thanks

Disney's version of the tree of life was quite a piece of work... we just returned from Animal Kingdom.
