I just got a new laptop with Vista on it and was wondering if there are things I should take off - similar to stripping the PC controller of much of its memory eaters. I'll be running VCarve Pro & Aspire and the usual other stuff as a design computer. Its an HP with Vista 64 bit.

Turn off UAC
Turn off DEP for the SB.exe software
Check your programs and features, remove all "bloatware". All that free junk that comes with it unless you actually need it.

I would make the system restore disks - even if you don't think you will need stuff you are removing - it is always a good idea to have a complete system restoration available.

Neville...
Usually when I buy a "branded" laptop, I do a clean install of the operating system. That does a lot to get rid of the merchandising and reporting apps that run in the backround. Many of these dont seem to be removable with normal methods. HP is pretty good about including a complete system restore either on disc or on a "D" partition.

Here's something worth mentioning if you were unaware, in Vista you can run a program in compatiblity mode.
Browse to the program, i.e. sb.exe, right click and go to the Compatibility tab. Select WinXP SP2 and click OK. If you are having trouble, this may be a way to get your program working again.

The one major thing I took off my new computer that helped the most WAS Vista.
