Hello everyone.

I want to share with you my 2 latest Mandalas which I created in my shop.

The first is a 36" circle carved from solid 1 1/2" end grain bamboo. The parquet pattern of the end grain bamboo is dazzling and gives the piece a lot of movement. The design is relativly simple (although the process is not) and is a series of intersecting circles.

The second is a 46" circle carved from solid hard rock maple. This design is far more intricit and is full of shapes. In person one can look from different angles and distances and find many shapes which overlap with a graceful flow. This is my personal favorite.

Great Work. I have done similar work based on chip carving patterns and noticed the trance inducing effect of the woven forms. It's nice to know the carvings have a name, Mandalaa is a much more pleasent name than "round plaque".

The maple mandala took aprox 6 hours with bit changes. The bamboo took only approx 2.5 hours.
Although circular designs are common, I can assure you these are original from my mind to the computer. I've gotten inspiration from many different sources, the bamboo one was inspired from a round cast iron grate used as a cover of a tree well. Perhaps what you saw was similar but not the same.

steve, nice job, I like the weave effect and the layers. Did you area clear or cut out and attatch to a secondary back?

Andre , the two weave sections were 3d cuts , the rest 2d cuts with a 3/8" round over. 17 hours in all.

Andre, i was speaking of stephens design that i thought i had seen before and going back and looking at the picture it looks nothing like what i thought i had seen.
