I just finished a chessboard for a graduation present for a family friend. Base is mahogany and squares are maple and walnut. Except for finishing, everything was done on the ShopBot using Aspire. The squares were inlayed using Aspire's Auto Inlay tool and the sloped edge was designed using Aspire's 3D modeling tools.

If you are interested you can find more details on the step-by-step method, including a .crv3D file, on the Vectric forum:

Thanks for looking

Tim,
When i saw your pictures in the other forum I thought (but would never say...) "that doesn't look that good" not realizing that what i was looking at was an unfinished project since i hadn't looked at it since the may 3rd posting.

Now that i see the finished project all i can say is "WOW"! It looks great.
What did you use for the finishing coat? Whatever it is it seems to bring out the beautiful colors of the different woods. Thats a great job Tim.http://www.talkshopbot.com/forum/images/icons/icon6.gif

The finish started with one heavy coat of Waterlox using a wet sanding technique with 220 grit sandpaper. This is what popped the grain. Let dry 24 hours, buffed and applied 6 coats of lacquer. Let dry overnight and buffed with 0000 steel wool and amber paste wax.
