I have a lot of chisels, knives, etc which I frequently put new edges on.
In this article various sharpening methods are tried, then examined under an electron microscope. The article is both concise, and for the most part written in an easy-to-read manner.
Simple methods are used such as whetstones, leather strops, etc, as well as sharpening machines. The results are compared analytically with photographs.
Thought it would be worth sharing:

Note it is 55 pages long, skim it and go read the conclusions if you want a shorter read.
Also note he demonstrates a simple jig for measuring the cutting angles on any blade. Trivial to build with a shopbot.
Professor Verhoeven has done some first class work here.
