I grew up in an old house built in the early 1900's so i have an appreciation of old architecture and was around alot of that as a kid. We had transom windows above the doors, carved pocket doors and lots of beautiful woodworks in the house. I fould out years later that the house used to be a funeral home! My brother and i used to ride from the basement to the second floor in a dumbwaiter we found behind a wall, that was fun!
I have taken stillshots from old movies and tried to recreate carvings kind of like this before. I wonder if there is any kind of source for 2d or 3d files of designs kind of like this?

Check out these three catalogs at this link for starters. http://www.archive.org/search.php?query=millwork%20AND%20mediatype%3Atext s%20AND%20subject%3A%22Millwork%20%28Woodwork%29%2 2
The Adams and Kelly catalog is incredible. I too grew up around houses built at this time. New houses always seem so chintzy by comparison, no matter how much they cost. I've seen some more catalogs like these but I'll have to try to remember where.

You might check http://www.goldenstudios.com/ (http://www.goldenstudios.com/)
The have several CDs with vector designs that are meant primarily for signs but I use them for a lot of different things. If you are reasonably proficient with Aspire (or any other 3D modeling program) you can make some wonderful period carvings.
