Plaque of Military Braches

I want to cut a Plaque of all of the Military Braches and the seal of the USA. Any ideas on how to place them, and maybe a phrase I could include. Here is what I came up with.

The Marines use the phrase "Semper Fi". I would imagine the other branches have some type of phrase also. Maybe you could make your plaque a bit bigger to allow room under each medallion to have room to carve each phrase maybe in a circle around it.

Good idea you have there. The plaque as is, is 48"x48". The one in the center is 16" and the others are 12" so there is room to do like you said. Maybe I should raise the center one?

I want to cut this and take it to the VA. McGuire Medical Center in Richmond Va. So I would like to have it as perfect as possible and I didn't want to leave any thing out.

I would do this a liitle differently since the suggestion of the pow-mia.

I would take the United states symbol out of the center and put it at the top 12 oclock position. Then i would put the pow-mia in the center and then arrange the various services like you have.
That would show that all the services have had pow-mia's. Have the various slogans (like semper fi) carved to follow the curve of the dish above each one and have a rope border on the outside or a circle of stars. If you want to do a little more research on the underside of each insignia dish shape put the date that service was established.

Randall, thanks for the file I'm going to take Jacks suggestion and arrange them as in the picture, it has meaning that does not need words.
I think this is going to turn out better than I had anticipated it would.

Consider what just happened in the past 6 hours:
1. A guy in North Carolina posts a designs and asks for suggestions
2. People from New York, South Dakota, and other locations offer input
3. A design is created using software written in the U.K.
4. The new artwork is incorporated into the original design

It is an amazing age we live in. I am thankful that Shopbot puts the time and resources into this forum to help collaboration like this happen.

If you took the center design, and enlarged its ring to the inside of the ring of text, (about the same spacing as between the rope and the text)then rearrange everything it will really help to make it one unit...I think.

I might try putting the top eagle in the middle, and the middle at the top, still with the rings the way I described above...

I want to thank all of the Shopboter's that helped with the creation of a GREAT LOOKING PLAQUE, I think
. I can still make changes if you think it would benefit the appearance of the Plaque.

I am still waiting on the VA to give me permission to place the Plaque, before I started this project I talked to them and she said there should be know problems, but, you know how the Government works. If I don't hear from her soon, I'm going to give out email address and phone numbers.
I don't have any problems with anyone that wants to cut one or one similar for your local VA after all you all helped and most important it's for the bravest and the best.
I think I'm going to cut this using 1 1/2 foam and then paint it using Dr. Joe Crumley's Sculptor technique, where is he when you need him. LOL I'm not sure of the color yet, and suggestions would be helpful.

Material: 1 1/2 " foam board
Bits 1/4" end mill, 22 degree Vbit, 60 degree Vbit, 1/8" ball nose, 1/4" ball nose.

Software: VCarve Pro, Aspire, Vector Art 3D Machinist

Cutting time was about 10 hours for all the Seals 1/8 ball nose, Area clearing about 4 hours, was done with 1/4" end mill and the 22 degree vbit, Letting around POW MIA seal and name plates took about 30 minutes using 60 degree vbit, and about 4 hours to cut the rope around the plaque using 1/4 ball nose.
And most important tool was ALL OF YOU!!!!!!!!
When I get it painted I'll post more pictures.

Since this is a military plaque it seems that a term from the military is appropriate for a compliment. When I was in basic training there was a drill sergeant who had a term that I think applies here. "Outf*****gstanding"!!

I used Aspire, and used the Area clearance with the flat depth checked, and I used 22 degree vbit and a 1/4 end mill.

I got the Plaque back from the painter today and this is how it looks. It is hard to see in the pictures but, the top of the lettering is painted gold.

When you first told me you were going to paint it I thought it might turn out funky looking with the crest on the eagle painted red, white and blue and a mish mosh of colors but it actually looks really good.

It looks like you have a gold medallion at the top and silver medallions around the appropriately black painted medallion in the center. That looks really good.
BTW- do you have a "butt" in your right hand? I thought you were going to give up that habit?

Jimmy first of all let me say that I was moved by the work you did on this plaque. I know that over time that it grew because of the efforts of your self and other members of this forum ! I know there are others on this forum and my self that would like to give the respect and admiration to fellow service members . MY question is ( and I think I know part of the answer) Could you share this cut file so that we can spread the Thanks and respect to more service members, (VFW, American Legion,National Gaurd Current members of the Army, Air Force, Marines, Navy, ECT.) If there would be a cost because of the files from James Booth or your time that would not be a concern or at least to me. Please let me know if there is any way that we can do this because as a veteran I know that every year we loose more of the ones that gave almost every thing so that we have what we have today. Thanks for your interest in my military plaque. I had a lot of help from various members on the forum in design suggestions to get it to what it is. I have had other members contact me about sharing so I contacted James Booth and he pointed out to me in most stringent terms that according to the license agreement that I couldn't share the actual files themselves (which I knew) but I thought I could make a shopbot cut file but he says I can't even do that...which I don't agree with, but have to abide by because he does a lot of work for me.

If you look at the overall design it isn't that complicated. The rope border with the text then the emblems set inside the circle with a little name block under each one to denote the branch of service.

I think based on the expert advice you got from a certain shopbotter (that shall go nameless):rolleyes: the placement of medallions surrounding the MIA medallion is perfect. The round shape symbolizes a circle of brothers, with the rope border symbolizing the unbroken bond that they all share...service to the country.
If i remember it correctly, the one thing i might add (because you can buy the model or may have it) is to add a barbed wire circle around the center MIA medallion. :D
