Rubber Stamps

I have searched the forum and have not found an answer to my question...can we cut rubber stamps on the Shopbot?

what about cutting a mold and pouring smoothon rubber into it?

I tried cutting some rubber gaskets once. Everything from sandwiching it between two boards to freezing it to make it more rigid. Best I got was really fuzzy edges, but usually it looked like someone plowed a furrow in the ground. I think the idea of cutting a mold for a pour has a lot of merit.

At one of the earlier Camps someone came in and said he cut rubber stamps all the time with his machine. Obviously the trick is finding a "rubber" that will machine cleanly.
The idea of a mold makes sense, but there too you'll need to be sure that what you're pouring into it will be the right texture to use for the purpose you have in mind...

When I was in jr. high school art class we took a piece of flooring tile, turned it over and carved a design in it. It was then inked and used as a stamp. I think the idea was to introduce us to carving.

I don't remember what kind of tile it was, but it had to have been cheap. Seems like it was 8" or 10" square. The rubber on the bottom of those tiles would be hard enough to machine I would think.

Maybe you could go to a flooring store and look around for some tile like that. Carve what you want on the bottom, machine off the flooring top where you'd normally walk on, and mount that on a piece of wood.

What about cutting rubber similar to the way they cut vinyl with a knife? Possibly using the system others have talked about when cutting cardboard.
Now if you are talking about carving a relief in rubber for a raised stamp i'm not sure about that.

I've been doing just that recently. I've cut just plain old plywood blocks and tried a couple with rubber attached, as well as one wil a linoleum tile applied to it.

Basically I v-carve the design first to make sure I have good sharp corners in the design, then I go back and pocket it.

I have indeed used hockey pucks for a prototype PCB housing with a military application, it machined very well!
