24.75 x 24.75 x .44 deep each side of a 1.375 thick alder panel.

The ball nose most carvers refer to is rounded only at the tip and not up the sides of the bit as a core box might be. This panel has .375 left to fit into the stile/rail groove. This 1.75 thick frame takes out any movement caused by the carving.

Very Nice work Gene. Man you said you were cutting at 5 ips on xy and 3 ips on z. I have a 2007 PRS standard and I cannot cut that fast without loosing steps. Best I can get is 3 ips on xy. Maybe I should look for a "vintage" machine. Keep the pics coming and if you ever need a helper or wish to take on a student I want to be first in line. Friggin cold here today in Ontario Canada.

hands down 4g...major improvement over 3.4.27 control software you are running now plus it's 2000 steps/rev with 4g not 200 steps/rev with your existing board

...then when you can, upgrade your design software

Mike - You bet! I can't tell you how much work I get from the Eastern seaboard from shops who have invested in big iron & it is cheaper for me to machine it on my SB than it is for them to run it because the big iron is too slow for 3D. Plus, many of the big machines lock up their control software so that you can't tweak the ramps without paying them big bucks to send a tech out to do it for you...Forget that! If you can't tweak it - you don't own it!

4G stands for 4th Generation of Standard (non-Alpha) tools. Your Alpha has a superior drive system to a 4G, so it doesn't really apply to your tool.

I am talking to ShopBot about the upgrade and they said it is just the board and gecko drives. Do I use the same power supply? They said I get $250 off if I send my old board back but I am thinking I would want to keep it as a backup?

here is a photo of my "beast"...i have jog set at 12IPS and have no problems. mdf and plywood i usually cut 5.0 IPS if using 3 passes the 4g board is a true plug n play setup...makes a big difference you'll be glad you upgraded, send in old board for the rebate don't think you would ever go back.....

How often do you use mdf for the door panels or do you use solid wood for all of the projects? Is there a site to look at all your work? It is quite impressive to say the least.
