I need a 1/2" bit to do pocketing on lexan but it seems no one makes a 0 flute that large. I used a straight bit this time but I want to cut faster. so just use a 2f upcut?

Onsrud....... you will find them here in the plastics section

O flutes.... straight, upcut, downcut, low helix, single flute, 2 flute
Hard to recommend without knowing your cutting specs but for pocket cut you might look to the 52-600 series

I was looking at the single flutes. not sure if I can afford 85.00 for a bit. well I should say the customer. the straight bit worked ok but I would like to have a bit cleaner bottom. the detail is all done with a 1/4" 0 flute so the bulk is done with the 1/2"

Contact Fred direct at Centurian-He may make it for you. Sounds like the description would be "1/2" O flute single flute straight pocketing bit" The geometry for mortising at the bottom is different from just cutting.

Would someone explain to me what a 0 flute bit is?

Here is an article that explains it very well:

Usually single flute bits are used for profile cuts and 2 flute bits are used for pockets when you want a smooth finish.

I will add although I cut a fair amount of plastic I do not cut lexan the stuff I cut is soft and has its own problems. I would contact Onsrud direct and ask to speak to one of their techs I have done this before for advice.

Dave and Michael, Thanks for your O flute information. That link to American Machinist was excellent. Kern

Glad we could help. Sometimes it seems as if picking the right bit, feed and speed can be as much art as science. The more one gets into the full range of possibilities with their Bot the more you learn.
