Jimmy, We have been applying the mask to the slab, routing the backgrounds down to almost the depth we want, and then just lightly blasting the bottom of the pocketed background with a cheap harbor freight sandblaster. The small blaster is enough to just get a blasted wood grain texture in cedar and redwood. It also "pebbles" urethane board pretty nicely.

If you need more aggressive blasting, maybe look for a local headstone company.

Best of luck.

John, Thanks for that info, I’ll look into that. I really think that would work. Do you have a model # of the one you use?

Jimmy ours looks like a toy honestly. Kinda like this... http://www.harborfreight.com/35-gallon-abrasive-blaster-with-vacuum-95502.html

The vacuum on it stopped working but we left the brush containment thing on the end and it keeps the media from bouncing back at you as bad. This is not a production setup by any measure and without the bot providing the brunt of the work by pocketing out the background first it would likely not work at all. But it works pretty good for an occasional sign.

If you have someone else blast for you.. remind them not to undercut!! The nozzle MUST be kept perpindicular to the surface.
