I have someone who wants me to make him a bedside table with a hidden pop open drawer that he can store a gun in. Does anyone know the name of the mechanism used or where to get something that would pop open a drawer?
I have a 100 year old chest upstairs that has a hidden drawer and you have to open the drawer below and reach in the back to pop open the drawer but that wouldn't work.

I also have an old cashregister drawer with a spring loaded release i might try to adapt.

I would try outwater.com They seem to have most everything. I know that there is a spring loaded catch you use on glass doors that should work fine

Try a push open magnetic latch

Blum Servo drive acts like a cabinet door touch latch but is made for drawers. Push on the drawer and it slides open. This is no substitute for the only safe way to keep a weapon safe from children. If there is any possibility of curious kids around then the rules for guns are well established. It is called a locked box they can not get into. There are gun drawers with numerical pushbutton safe mechanisms that are much more appropriate then any "trick" system. I wouldn't want to live with the knowledge that I built something to satisfy a client or friend that ended up leading to a disaster. No kids around means a Blum Servo is fine.

design it so seams look like part of the design reveals, i have used magnetic push latches, but the secret is a small button head dowel (part of the design) that acts as the owners secret lock.

Safety is the first thig to think about when storeing a gun I have to agree.
you could add some electronics (pretty cheap) like this

Try looking at Arduino.com for more ideas.

I went to the gun store to get some ideas and saw a cool "biometric lockbox" where you have to place your finger over it to make the lock open and if i could find something like that it might be a good feature to incorporate (just the lock) but it was over $200.00.

I'll say it before you do.....:D "What price do you put on safety?":)
