I just finished visiting with Frank at SB and he told me the 4G upgrade board is back to being availble. There were to many folks that could not justify the 3 thousand dollar controller and that is why they are bringing it back.

Part number 15304 and comes with 4 geckos. priced the same as before. $1495 with a nominal rebate for trading in your old board.

I know there are folks with older machines that would like to hear this, so I wanted to post it up.

Howdy Kenneth ,

I can't find any info on the 4g upgrade on the ShopBot site search for the part number show up nothing ...

I am buying 2001 prs and I am doing research to make it faster / smoother the 4 g seems to be the best bet for this .

thanks for posting it is back... just need to find it :)

I don't think it is posted on the web site.

Call them with the part number that I listed and they should be able to fix you up.

FYI a 2001 model is going to be a PRT and not a PRS.

Good luck with it.

Very good to hear, I might just...
I have had a special purpose cnc built here in UK, it works fine but is full of Chinese electronics, and mach 3 is driving me bananas. I am waiting for it to blow up so I can replace it with shop bot electronics - I have an old prt board to swap in for a 4g. If my motors were directly compatible and easily connectible, even just swappable, I might just do it for the easier to run system. The motors are a similar size to the Oriental ones, and the specs are:
Motor 85BYGH450B-004
1.8deg 1.9v 3.5a 4 wire
Phase resistance = 0.53 ohm
Phase inductance = 6.5 mh
Torque = 5.1 N.m
I am not up on motor electronics, so if anyone thinks it would work, I would be very pleased to hear.

Happy new year to all,

Ralph.

Ralph, those motors can be used with Geckodrive stepper drivers (G201x and G203v).

Because the inductance is 6.5mH, you should use a power supply giving about 70VDC, but not more than the Gecko's limit of 80VDC. (The higher the voltage, the faster the motor can run but the higher the motor's temperature.)

The motors pull 3.5 A, so you would need to up a 47K 1/4W current limiting resistor with the Geckodrives.

If you use a Shopbot 4G module, check with Shopbot about heat sinking and about the correct way to replace the current limit resistors that they use.. Gecko recommends using a heat sink when their drives are used with motors pulling as much current as your motors will pull.
