Joe:
Magnate is an excellent source for quality bits, and their prices are hard to beat. However I haven’t found a source for “big” V bits that come to a true point. I’ve attached photos of some of my work with Magnate bits that illustrate this. The only V-bit I have that comes to a true point is a three flute CMT and it’s not “big”.

I tend to agree with you Steve, I find that if I can get it down to 30 to 50 thou I'm doing good. It is easier to find quarter to half inch bits that get close to true v. On my big insertable Onsruds the factory says that if I ask for inserts for a true v they can supply them. I just haven't needed them badly enough lately to make a special order.

Amana has a 1.25" 90 and 91deg insert bit. Just one flute. This is what I use when I need a true point.

Fellows,

Gerber makes all their V's with the extra little snipe on the tip. That gives the deliclate little line in the well of the letter. Their largest diameter is 1.25.

I'm not too concerned about the well of the letter when carving letters with a body stroke of 1.5" or 2". I have a couple of the big baby's and they work great. Well ballanced too. Wouldn't it be nice to have a 2" 120 degree bit!

Steve,

Those are extremely handsome examples you've shown. The excellent carving technique is set off by the finish. I enjoy seeing your handy work.

Hey Guys. I have two BIG vbits from Onsrud. They are 120 degree 2" and the other is 140 degree 2" both 1/2" shank. Here is pic of the 120 and link to onsrud website. Price is fair as well. I think I paid around $40 with shipping from a canadian supplier. I cut sign parts for two sign guys that do allot of gold in the vcarve lettering and they insist on these bits to give a better reflection of the gold. :):)
