I'm upgrading one of the apartments and I think I want to do some crown molding or some type of valance(?) lighting and wondered if anyone had any suggestions or patterns or links for pictures, ect?

I think i saw your nice valances, which is the wrong word for me, sometimes words get stuck in my head and i can't associate the proper name for the picture i see in my head.

I want to make a box to cover say a flourescent tube light that goes on the wall.......SCONCE(?) (that just popped in my head).

I have also seen boxes made where crown molding is held several inches down from cieling and lights like LED are inserted, thats what i'm trying to do.

That is what i did in my theatre room at my house. I installed a base 3" down from the ceiling and then i added a 3 5/8 crown on top of that . I used rope lights behind the crown with a dimmer . Turned out good but the whole room is very impracticle .

You know Gene "a picture is worth a thousand words" and you just wasted 50 of them...lol:D

I think i understand but if you could post some pictures that would be great. The idea is to have indirect light when you turn the switch on shinig up from these boxes. Any info on the rope lights would be much appreciated too. Thanks!

Has anyone made any type of crown molding on the bot? Any tips on how?

I haven't made it on the bot but simple and easy is better. Gutters are what I have used in commercial applications for a nice indirect light .

Jack you could make crown on the 'bot but it will take a while, and paint grade crown is pretty reasonable at the big box store.

Attach a 1x3 or 1x4 to the wall as if it were a shelf. Mount your crown molding to the "shelf" so that the bottom of the crown is flush with the bottom of the shelf. You now have a trough in which you can lay fluorescent tubes or rope lights. You'll probably need some blocking inside to keep it from sagging but you can figger that part out.

Watch out for cheap rope lighting. I bought a roll for use in my kitchen and most of it burned out within the first year.

David,
That makes sense. What i envision is the form of a long "flower box" with a fancy carved slanted front to it.

I do think i want to put some type of low voltage lightweight lighting because i intend to glue the sheetrock directly to the cinderblock but need to carve a slit in the back of the sheetrock to run the wires. Does anyone see a problem with doing it that way if i'm using low voltage lighting?

You can use low voltage LED lights with a peel and stick back on them . They are rated for 50,000. hours and run off of a 12 volt transformer.
look on e bay they are on a coil of 5meters for about 38.00 ( i think) The only bad thing is they come from hong kong and take about 3 weeks to get them

If you tell me how to post a drawing done in aspire to the forum i will draw how i did mine, and also post some photos tomorrow. Also you can buy paint grade crown cheaper than making it . at the lumber yard here it runs about .39 a foot for 3 5/8 finger joint
