Hi guys,

I've got a challenge for you. I'm trying my hand at making some cribbage boards and I've run into a road block when it comes to peg storage.

I'd like to do something similar to an existing board I have (seen in the photos) with the little aluminum slide-out piece and pocketing out a compartment for the pegs.

I can't seem to locate a suitable router bit/cutter to cut the thin slot that keeps the aluminum cover in place. The aluminum cover is .033 thick and is about .660 wide.

I would sure appreciate it if you could help me out here and direct me as to how I go about buying the right bit to do this job.

Thanks,

Easy man, any dovetail bit will do what you want to do. Just experiment a bit as to width and depth. Works great! I've used it many times.

what type of slot cutting bit? Don I think not only does he need to cut the "compartment" but he also needs to cut some type of slot for the metal lid to slide in.
Maybe something like this polycrystalline diamond bit here:

I think Gary Campbell has found some of these narrow slot cutting bits somewhere. Gary?

Here's another option. Covers were cut from 1/8" PVC.

Donn,
I thought about using the dovetail bits. I'm just looking at this board and the thin slot that they have and figured there must be a cutter to make that cut somewhere.

Gary,
Do you know of anybody that makes a bit with around a 1/2" diameter and a thinner kerf?

Scott,
That's a neat solution. I might think about something like that if I can't find the bit I'm looking for. Thanks for sharing that with us. I know there are others that will like your cover as well.

Eric:
I attached a detail of the method I think Donn was describing. This is a method found on many old and “antique” boxes and actually works very well. As you can see from the detail drawing, a square cut metal slider can also be used if you don’t care for the tapered edge of a wooden slide. This style is actually more forgiving than a square cut slot if you have shrinking or swelling of your parts after production.

You can use a keyslot bit for that.

Eric,
What you are looking for is called a woodruff keyseat cutter.
You can find them at Msc.com. Use search word keyseat cutter.

Donald,

Not sure of that website you gave. It goes to a company in Japan Rigaku.
