Does anybody know where I can buy Trupan or anything else that will work for a Brady Vac around Baltimore?

Atlantic Plywood carries it out of Richmond, VA. They also will deliver within a pretty good radius.

That's still pretty far, are there other products that will work?

Any Ultra light MDF will do. I have found no detectable difference in application from Trupan or Sierra Pine ULMDF. The recent Trupan I got in was sized at net 48 x 96 instead of 49 x 97. Since I would rather have that extra inch I will be using ULMDF in the future

Harbor sales carries the Sierra Pine but only delivers to commercial addresses, that won't work for me:)

I'm going to try and track down a vendor for the Sierra Pine. Which product of their's do you use and how thick should it be?

http://www.industrialplywood.com/ I am in Cockeysville right down the road from you. I had industrial meet me in York PA at a rest stop closest to one of there regular customers.

I'm still trying to find it a little closer than York, but that will work if I get desperate

What's the thickness of the Trupan material I should use?

I would use 1 inch. That will give you some room to resurface. I used 3/4 and regret it.

BTW I think that place is your best bet. I contacted the US distributor http://www.tumac.com/contact.html and asked them for a list of vendors and Industrial was the closest.

I'm thinking about trying the sierra pine products if I can find a supplier locally. Harborsales would deliver a 3/4 inch piece for around $40.00 bucks. They only deliver to commercial addresses, which is something I don't have.

Do you have a friend with a local business address you can send it to? I also find if you throw a tip at most drivers they won't really care. Just a suggestion.

I was thinking along those lines myself but found a local yard that is getting me a sheet of the Sierra Pine ULMDF for around $50.00.

I'll let everybody know how it works once I get everything together.

Usually better price, much better stock, and they have the actual Trupan product...

A&M Supply in Springfield, Va.

Ask for Keith, tell him John from Pennsylvania sent you!

I've finally gotten around to trying the Sierra pine and it's not working out very well. Here's what I did:

1) Used Bill's tool for cutting the grids
2) Surfaced the opposite side for good measure.
3) Took another piece of Sierra pine and cut a 4" hole
4) Mounted an adapter that goes to my turbo vac.
5) Sandwiched a gasket out of plastic between the bottom piece and the grids.

When I turn the vac on, the two pieces of ULMDF stick together, but I can't even get a piece of paper to stick to the surfaced side of the Brady Vac. I have not sealed my edges yet, but expected some suction without doing so.

I'm starting to wonder if my yard got me the correct product. How much lighter is the Sierra pine ULMDF supposed to be than regular MDF? The stuff I have felt as heavy as regular MDF.

Jim:

I assume you remembered to cut the same hole in the plastic?
And also all the Vac grid has channels running to the hole?
I've used SP ULDF for years no problem. The color is lighter then their MDF and the weight is around 20 pounds less.
Most guys running Feins turbos use two for a 4 x 8.

Also since you have only 1 zone for the whole table something as small as a piece of paper won't be held down unless the rest of the table is masked off. Throw a full sheet of goods on it for a true test.

A picture is worth 1k....Post up what you've got.

If you are running Ultralight MDF, LDF or Trupan - you should be fine. Unless you've got one wicked shopvac, a piece of paper will only suck down directly over the port below the bleeder.

Throw a full sheet on there and then test. If you are not running a Fein Turbo3 or one of the Lighthouse motors, plan to be disappointed.

I tried to add the image as an attachment, hopefully that worked.

The photo is my vac, upside down. The Brady vac board is on the bottom, and in the photo it is shown upside down. Just image that the bottom piece has the grids facing up, and then flip the whole thing over.

I did manage to remember to cut the hole in the plastic:D My hold down is only 16 x 36, so I'm not sure what the issue is. BTW, I am using a Turbo III.

CH Briggs in Laurel, MD stocks 1/2", 3/4", & 1" Ultralite MDF. You can pickup at their warehouse or have it delivered for a small fee.

Thanks for the tip, I'll give them a call because I really think what I got from the yard is not the right material. I tried to hold down something the covered the entire surface without any luck.

I've attached a better shot of what I'm trying to do.

Trupan is the most porus board on the market. Call Rob Simonson @ Tumac
425 258-2217 to find a local dealer. Sierra Pine is dense board, and will not give you as much vacuum power. It looks like you got standard density board. A sheet of 3/4 4x8 standard density MDF shouldn't cost more than $35.00 no matter where in the country you are.

Also any of the dealers can order oversized panels (49x97), just ask them to. The problem is it takes about 90 days to get a shipment from Chile, and the product has to be ordered in full containers. Most dealers will order a couple containers a year.

I finally found a local source for Trupan. CH Briggs has it at their PA location and will send it down to their Laurel location for no additional cost. I'm should have it by Tuesday.
