Sign material resource

I would like to find a resource, preferably a website, that explains what materials are available for sign carving. I'm interested in knowing more about materials such as color core and HDU and other materials that I am not familiar with. I am not necessarily looking for a supplier. At this point I want to know more about materials that are available.
