I will be making a sign later this week from ColorCore and wanted some advice on bit selection. I have seen 1/2 60 degree V Bit used for text. Is this the best choice?

Thanks Dan

Dan, As Burchtree said, Centurion tools make nice bits for ColorCore. I also use Unsrud engraving bits. They have them in 15º with flat bottoms from .010 through .090. They cut clean also. If possible it helps to avoid sharp outside corners also?

we only use V bits if the font size, style, space between characters allow V bits to work properly.

Most of the time we are not able to use V bits and do a good job.
for larger letters we have used V bits on the edges of the letters and flat bottom bits for the inside of letters.

for small letters we have used 90degree bits as the shallower bits tend to take too much of the top layer outside the letter and if the spacing of the text characters are too close to each other these routed areas overlap.

So the V bits can be used but it depends on all of the issues fonts above.
best to do some tests to see if you like the results.

we do rout alot of very small text with 1/8'' flat bottom bits. however because the top layer of most color core is thick this can cause a legibility issue when the signs are viewed at angles because you do not see the core color in the middle well at angles on small text. That is when the V bits are valuable for legibility at angles if they can be used.

They do make color core with a thinner top layer that works better for v bits called poly-scribe with a .050 top layer which is much thinner than some. not sure what thicknesses it comes in
