Cutting test topo

I wondering if anyone had suggestions for cheap materials to test topography cut files? Maybe a foam or wood?

Foam insulation board or 3/4" MDF from the bog box store is about the cheapest you will find. Have fun cleaning up the dust.

We've cut hundreds of topo's using alder. We always glue up quarter-sawn fashion in order to get our height (some of our maps can be very high since we live in a mountainous area). Alder is a beautiful wood, cuts and finishes very well.
