Hi Everyone;

I got my ShopBot delivered (PRSAlpha 48x96) and finally all set up and running on this end, but still a bit confused by the spindle speed control.

I have a VF1000 and a 4HP HSD spindle, and the RPM on the spindle control tool application, and the spindle RPMs indicated on the VFD don't match.

The highest I get on the RPM control is 10800, but the VFD indicates 18000. I must be overlooking the documentation on the RPM tool so I thought I'd come straight to you guys. Any ideas on this?

Mike...
Answer these please:

1) Have you purchased and installed the Spindle control board (an option)? IF no go to 5) below

2) If answer to 1) is yes, then is spindle control board wired to proper VFD terminals (via phone type jack)?

3) Is spindle control board connected to control computer via a USB cable AND plugged into a USB port separate from the USB hub that drives the ShopBot controller?

4) If answer to 2 or 3 is no, refer to documentation and install as per instructions, or call SB Tech supt for additional info.

5) If you wish to have this feature, you need to order the part from SB

Thanks for the quick response Gary;

#1 The spindle control board came installed as part of the VFD1000
#2 N/A (pre-wired)
#3 Yes... using two different USB ports (same computer)
#4 NA
#5 NA

It's working... and I can change RPM using the RPM tool app... but the highest it indicates as 10800, when the spindle RPM at the VFD is indicating 18000.

I was wondering also if there is documentation on the yellow tab sheet that pops up? I have the VFD-1000 set, but don't know what might be causing the RPM to indicate 10800?

Mike...
Looks like an email or call to SB Tech Supt is in order. I dont know that there is any docs on the fill in sheet, but that is not to say that they dont exist.

It's weird. It's working... and I can change the RPM, but its a different value than whats on the VFD.

I may be looking at the wrong number on the VFD.

My spindle came with a Yaskawa series V74x controller. A page in the 16 page manual had some settings to program the VFD for ShopBot control. I don't know what the settings do but mine works.

In the setup sheet there is a scale factor (may be called something similar - I'm not in front of a machine). I had similar results with a yaskawa and changing the scale factor to the value Ryan at shopbot supplied put the rpm window and vfd in sync.

it just sounds like the display is not set to show rpms. by default it is not set for it.
here is how to do it.

Changing the VFD Display

Before beginning, it is assumed that the user knows how to navigate through the Yaskawa VFD interface. If this is unclear, please refer to Programming the VFD for ShopBot control on page 10 of HSD Manual (SBG00318070814HSDSpindlePRS&PRTalpha.doc) and page 9 of the HSD Manual (SBG00323071014HSDspindlePRSPRTstandard.pdf).

 Turn the ShopBot Control Box and spindle power ON.

 Press the RESET button on the left side of the Control Box. This action will turn the VFD ON.

 Press the DSLP (display) button on the VFD keypad to scroll through the modes until PRGM (program mode) is illuminated. This will display a parameter number.

 Use the Up or Down Arrow keys to change to parameter number N35.

 Press Data Enter again to show the Setting Increment.

 Using the Up or Down Arrow keys to change the Setting Increment to 1180.

 Press Data Enter again to accept the Setting Increment.

 Press the DSLP button on the VFD keypad to scroll through the illuminated modes until FREF (frequency reference) is selected.

The VFD display will now read RPM/1000 i.e. 12,500 RPM will display as 12.5.

Thanks Steve;

I think that manual refers to the V7X series Yaskawa drives.

Applies to HSD Spindles with Yaskawa model series V74X 3HP, 5HP, 7.5 and 10HP variable frequency drives with the PRSalpha and PRTalpha control boxes.

I have a Yaskawa V1000.

On the RPM control, there is a setting for 'Hertz', and 'Hertz Scale'. By setting those the same, the RPM (or at least the indication on the RPM tool and what is on the display).

Anyone have any idea what this sheet should be set at? (the HSD has 200Hz on the label, and 12,000 RPM)

unless they changed the vfd I have a 4hp hsd spindle though I have the 3phase. this worked fine.

That's probably the difference. I have a 1 phase setup (4HP spindle and Yaskawa V1000 VFD)

The displays are different for sure.

but I bet the programming is the same if you ahve the same menu's in there.
I found this

It's kindof weird. When I power the controller up. I don't get the:

F X.XX

that I was expecting. Instead I get v XX.XX

Everything works... but I'm puzzled that I'm not getting the display everyone is describing.

Here's a pic:

I think Ken is right. Click where is says RPM this will bring up a fill in sheet. There is a setting for scale factor. This is to sync the software to the display of the drive. I think it needs to be set to 60. Once you make a change you may need to close the RPM software and reopen. The VFD are tested at ShopBot so the programming in the drive should be correct.

Thanks Ryan;

I have it set at 60 Hertz and 60 scale factor and it matches the spindle display.

One question I still have though is the display of the VFD1000. When powering it up, the manual says I should be getting a F XX.XXX display, but I'm getting a v XX.XX as shown in that picture.

Anyone have an idea what that is?

My new machine has the V1000, and the LED display won't change from CPF00. Thing is frozen solid. In the hands of tech support now. Joe. :cool:

Mike, thanks for bringing this topic up. I have a brand new BT48 with 4HP spindle (1ph) and had exactly the same issue with the RPM readout on SB3 (spindle at 18000 gave reading of 10800). Setting the "Hertz Scale" to 60 (was 100) makes the RPM readout correct, thanks. There are some other minor GUI bugs with the SB3 RPM display still (like the letters "RPM" seem to get corrupted) but it still works. I note that the min RPM I can set reliably is 5000. If I input values below this, some do nothing (e.g. if I input 4000, when it was already at 5000, then nothing happens...the display and spindle stay at 5000), and some values do odd things (e.g. inputting 200 makes the spindle go to 15080 (IIRC), and inputting 64 makes it go to 16,xxx (I've forgotten the exact number, sorry!)). These are minor inconveniences though, and the display is useful as-is.

FWIW, my V1000 display says "v10.00" during normal operation. I haven't looked at it as it powers up yet....anyone want me to look?

Cheers,
Dave Fifield
