Looks good Dan. Tell us about your choice of motors, etc. Also looks like a lot of z travel in that plate. Are you planning a below table indexer?

Your right on for the long Z , there is enough space at the end of the table to mount the indexer down low.
I have for the present gone to the other side, meaning for testing purposes I have loaded "mach3" a unlicensed copy to test the motors and drivers, it has "drivers test" to set up the computer for top speed,if your computer is capable then you can run the pulse train up to 100k.
I bought the MK-HS869802 motors and M880A drivers, built a control box and power supply, the motors will turn up to 1200 rpm end of shaft test with rpm tester, installed 2 of them on the gantry direct with 25 tooth gear, and ran the gantry back and forth to see if they could handle it "its heavy"
end result is I am very pleased with them. I have the belt reduction gears, belts for a 3 to 1 setup, even with the reduction I will never be able to use all the speed the motors are capable of..

Oops, your right Gene, this is the rest of the story.
What started off with a 2001 shopbot prt bought from the woodweb and then modified has been a lot of fun, I think I like modifying them more than running them.
The latest, the only oringinal parts are the side channles and table cross members. I bought a buddy prs table for 250.00 plus shipping off the shopbot forum and used the parts to make what you see.
The table side rails are the gantry I used the buddy legs because they were so much taller and the rest of the table to beef up the original. its not finished, probably never will be, its far more rigid than I ever expected,
I have cut aluminum at .5 speed at .065 depth with a 3/8 single flute with not a sign of stutter and a real nice clean cut. I contacted the people who made the extrusion, about joining 2 pieces together was told if done right would be have as much strength as a single piece. so here is the video, if you care to look...

I recieved a email asking where I got the Zaxis, its homemade..its 2 LE15-1 NSK linear slides from ebay for 76:00 bucks-- on a .300 wall 4x4 aluminum tube cut in half, and a 1in. squre tube inserted into that for the gear track to sit on. stuck between 2 pieces of shopbot table angle. its stuck on 5/16 steel plate.
