i made a wood strip canoe in my shop... long b4 shopbot was purchased... it came with a paddle plan

Building A Strip Canoe by Gil Gilpatrick about $20... never made the paddle... but the boat floats great and everybody is amazed by its beauty. found the plan... it is on 2 8x10 pages and has 2 b taken to kinkos or somewhere for enlarged full size pattern.... wat i talking about... u can enlarge it in aspire or hopefully watever software u have.

my kids do scanning for me... they s.b home soon!!!

Thanks Jeff,
i have no problems finding shapes for oars.
as you know the blade of a rowing oar is not flat.
so i am realy looking for a 3d file to cut one.
all the work i do is in 2d so know nothing about how to go about designing anything in 3d.
just was hoping someone out there might be able to help
thanks

the instructions said 2 make them from 3/4 stock and sand or route the edges to desired profile

If you have Aspire, try the two rail sweep to make nice flowing curves for the blades.

David,

I have heard references to a "two rail sweep" before and have never seen it explained. I am going to go do a search on that, but if you have a link to a specific explanation, or video link, etc, I would really like to learn about that. ( I am sure there are others who would also like to learn about it, too.)

Best Regards,

Monty

You can watch the 2 Rail Sweep video here;

Pretty amazing stuff when you get into it.

Here's a quick "not to scale/shape" attempt. Just a sample.

This has also been talked about on the Vectric site.

A two rail sweep is a function in 3d in aspire. essentially, you take two lines, the outside edge of the oar and the center line, then choose a line to represent the profile that you want and Aspire will create the model. you can do multiple profiles along the line and blend them. There are very good tutorials on the Vectric site as well as their forum.

Paul:
To do this you need some kind of a 3-d toolpath generating software. If you have Partworks then that includes cut 3-d but you need to create a 3-d relief to do it. Turbocad will give you the shapes you need but it still needs to be turned into a relief (or actually 2 of them-front and back, although they may be identical depending on your oar.)
You also may be able to do this with the extruder in SB3 but exactly how to do it would need to come from someone who has had experience with that tool.
Maybe Bill Y can help you with that!
It is actually fairly easy to produce what you need in either Artcam or Aspire.
If you have a "loose" schedule on this send me an e-mail or PM and I will help.

I'll take one of those signs for my shop!!
Mind if I build a little relief? Of course, like a lot of my "personal" projects it may take a year or two!
If you have it in vectors or dxf I'd love it!

Dave

This is a vector file and I have it in DXF. Send me mail and I'll attach a copy and send it.

If I were going to to attempt this art, I'd probably use a background. There are lots of possabilities with welding vectors. It's totally open to intertertation. I may give it a try also

Anyone else interested in a copy send me mail.

thanks joe for the dxf...

as u can tell by my junior status..... i got problems!!!

brought it in as aspire component and all seems inverted... instead of coming out from the wood it goes in... looks pretty good in... but i was hoping for out.... innies and outies aren't just for bellie buttons...

i know there is a way to reverse this....

really like the idea... i should post the wood strip canoe i made from plank lumber

this is the learning u spoke about..

I have sent a second file on this artwork. Please look over what you have and make sure it has three versions and discard the original.

If there are those who would like to give this a try, please send me your email address.

Hey Joe! Sure doesn't look like you are in any need of those paddles! :D Love the shirt, so I added my version of the sign to the fence! ;)

Dang Ron,

I could make some real money with that idea. I like the extra texture you put on the background too. Do you mind if I show it to the owners of the motorcycle business? Now if I could only get some of you guys to make it. And then install it!

If anyone else wants one of these files send me mail. I got plenty extras setting around beside the Post Holes.

Ron's is much better than mine... I wanted to put a texture in that background area to look like water rippling. Just ordered an 1/4" ballnose ... Here's my effort... A little self critique... i had difficulty offsetting the outline for the 2 rail sweep... couldn't get the nodes to line up on corners. i tried converting 2 curves... bezie etc. I left it as a bezia because had less nodes and i thought it wood machine better. All Looked Ok in aspire 2 me and for my wall, but after carving, i think i will raise the lettering above the paddles more. Very fun project for me. It hangs in the pool room with many other projects. my friends all gravitate to your design like its the only carving on the wall. Lots of enjoyment from that one.

Thank u

Hey Joe!

Feel free to show it - just send me one of your famous post holes! :D
I actually plan on cutting one - I'll post images when I get it done!
