I had both die last year within two weeks of each other. I replaced them as I did not have time to get a new motor. though I found replacing the brushes worked. but this one I bought in july and now lights come on but it does not start. lucky it is only 7 blocks to the repair shop and I have a backup fein and a backup system.

Ouch.
Were they making any hints they were going byebye? or was it running, doing good, running - OFF ?
I have a high pitched whistle in one of mine. I've been looking and can't find a vac leak anywhere. Seems to be somewhere around the head.

When my last one died it just cut off in mid-file. If I hadn't been nearby and alone in the shop with nothing else making noise I would have missed it. With the dust collector, other Fein, and spindle cutting noise, the sound of the motor dying just barely registered in the back of my head as I was concentrating on something on the design computer. Went to check the machine and sure enough, no vacuum. (I was lucky to be at a point in the program where I didn't lose anything, and had time to shut off the hose to that motor.)
Another reason not to leave the machine cutting unattended.
Hey guys I don't have a vacuum table. David B. may remember I came close to building one a few years ago when I visited him but did not build one in the end because I couldn't justify the expense, which I still can't. However, I have a question and pardon my ignorance: Isn't a proper vacuum table supposed to be run off of a 3 phase heavy duty 240 volt vacuum piston pump? I know a Fein is a very fine shop vac, but it's not actually a "piston pump", per say, is it? Or is it?
I have a good shop vac, a Sears model, 120v, that I use for shop cleaning. If I put my hand over the intake hose, it gets very loud and is not happy if it can't "breathe". I imagine that with no air to feed the motor, it would burn out fairly quickly if I used it in such a fashion for an extended time, which would be akin to using it as a vacuum hold-down, would it not?
I ask because I'm just curious. ;)

the feins use a bypass motor so they have a fan just for cooling it so having no air is not a problem for them. the problem with bigger vac setsup is the noise the power needed and the heat and cost.

Well not only that. A friend of mine runs a E-Z Route (5x12) table for a local sign company and has the 240v 3 phase piston pump vacuum motor and it won't hold small parts after a while when he's cutting through no matter what he does.
I'm like Mark, kinda. A few years ago I set up a vac system and it worked, kinda. With most of my jobs it wasn't necessary and it soon made it's way too the dumpster.
I'm thinking of giving it a try once again but I know it will take a full day or two to get it all setup.
Dang that's expensive.
Naw, I can't do it.
