I have a Buddy PRSStandard with a router but the noise is deafening. Since I want to go mobile now I'm wondering if it can be upgraded to a spindle. Is there a 110 v spindle, or would I need to get professional help rewiring? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

John...
All Spindle motors are 230/460V AC 3 phase. A Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) can accept either single or 3 phase input. 3 phase power allows the VFD to match the spindle HP, i.e. 4hp VFD for 4hp spindle. When run on single phase the VFD must be oversized (I think rule of thumb is 1.8 to 1) and be programmed for single phase use.

I am not aware of a VFD that can accept 110v (half or split phase) and both increase the voltage and generate the required 3rd power leg.

So, to answer your question, you would need to obtain 230V power supply at your mobile location to power a Buddy with a spindle.

John,

I'm assuming you have a big Porter Cable router and they are indeed very noisy. Several years ago, I chunked my Porter Cable and bought this Milwaukee:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00007FPJK/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_1?pf_rd_p=486539851&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B000W3O3GM&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=17D98PKTQEXQF82GY5TB

It's much, much quieter than the PC's with more than enough power and was easy enough to mount on the Bot.

Spindles are nice but expensive to purchase and have repaired. These routers are kinda like a Bic lighter: When it runs out of fuel, chunk it and get another.

Thank you both for the great info.
