Was wondering if anyone else had this problem. I downloaded the .38 control software. Once I started it, I started getting a virus called Gen:Trojen.Heur.bno@sbl@gkming trying to run from SBParts/custom/myvars.exe and running a search protocolhost.exe. I ran the virus scan and found the trojen and got rid of it, but I didn't notice it until I did the upgrade. Anyone else had this problem? I asked the service department, but no reply.

If your copy of Windows is valid/legit/legal/not-hacked
you are entitled to a copy of Microsoft Security Essentials.
During the installation process, you will be required to go thru MS' Verification process
so you'd better have a legit copy of their operating system.
If you don't already have it, you can download it from
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/security_essentials/default.aspx (http://www.meteo.fr/temps/domtom/antilles/pack-public/animation/animMOSAIC2.html)
and stop paying $$ to Kaspersky, Norton, AVG and everyone else too! ;)
I've been running nothing but Microsoft Security Essentials now, for about 2 yrs.
and it will pop up right away, if something funny's going on
-like when I plugged in my infected USB-key a few weeks ago!
...............................................
MalwareBytes is another good one for occasional rooting out of misc. nasties..
http://www.malwarebytes.org/
Just make sure the definitions are up to date before scanning.
It'll root out Back Door and other intrusions lurking in there
-stuff you never even knew you had!

Hi David, useful reply there that many will benefit from. Please check the url that your first link leads to - the text is correct but the hyperlink takes you somewhere quite different than Microsoft.
Thanks,

I agree with David. I've been using Microsoft Security Essentials for the last couple of years too. It has a very light footprint on the system, doesn't get in the way, and best of all, it's free.
Stop paying good money for products that have their tentacles all throughout the system (Norton, McAfee), and that recently have actually deleted some important system files during updates (McAfee), crippling many computers. Most people never pay for the yearly updates anyway and therefore never download updated virus definitions.

Oh well, at least you now know whether it's gonna rain in the islands -or not...
I caught the mistake right away
and Edited it a few secs. after posting
but it seems that originally-submitted URLs are cast in stone at the SB server
and do not respond to Editing?
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/security_essentials/default.aspx
is the correct link where you can download Microsoft Security Essentials.
Sorry about that -lesson learned.. :o

Most people never pay for the yearly updates anyway and therefore never download updated virus definitions. Most people have little idea how updated virus definitions work
or even that the software has to scan the computer, in order to work.
I've had SO many ladies enquire whether the computer has to be even turned on, for it all to work...
but we won't dwell on that..
Before Microsoft Security Essentials came along
the software that I used on my machine, and put on all my clients' computers was AVG-Free!
I chose that one mainly because it auto-updated its virus definitions when the computer booted
and you could select an appropriate time of day for it to scan automatically
both of those functions performed with zero input from Lil Old Lady
and even without her knowing!
When I visited her computer again in six months time
all I ever had to do was visit AVG's Virus Vault, to see what had been apprehended
and throw it out.

Hmm - the original question was has anyone had an issue with the latest SB3 download. I noticed in the release notes:
Version 3.6.34
> Removed Virtual Tools Utility that was triggering a virus-checking error.
I just download and installed .38 and found no problem with it in this regard.

...and for what it's worth..
I just downloaded SB Control software version 3.6.38
from URL http://www.shopbottools.com/mSupport/controlsoftware.htm
-and have now installed it here at home on my Windows VISTA Business computer system
without that final act of installing drivers (becoz my nearest Shopbot is about 8 miles away)..
..had no problems with the download or installation.
Everything went well, smoothly
Microsoft Security Essentials did not pop up all excited to warn me of anything
so all's well here!

A quick update about the program that was removed in the most recent version of the control software.
For 5 years or so there has been a program in the Utilities virtual tool called "ZtoB" that copied the Z-axis values to the B axis, for people that had two cutting head that were connected in the Y-axis, running in parallel and cutting the same thing. A couple of months ago we heard from a few ShopBotters that their antivirus program was flagging it as a virus.
It turned out that the Antivirus program was looking for mispellings of virus names, and that there is a trojan named "ZBot" which was causing the false flag. Since "ZtoB" was such a specialized program that very few ShopBotters (if any) used any more, we decided to remove it from the control software install and put it in ShopBot labs.

Butch's post is important to everyone on here, especially those who make their living with their 'bot, but it got pulled off topic very quickly. Not meaning to be a fuss budget but for this one maybe we should pull it back on topic so here it is. Hopefully it's nothing to worry about but, just in case, thanks much Butch :)

Thanks for the replys.
I or actually my virus checker, BitDefender (was #1 in PC Magazine) removed the Trojan and Trojan1 exe's from the computer. I think I will look at the Microsoft again, as I have been told a couple times now it is pretty good. I tried their virus check, when Microsoft was using it as a sales tool (?) or something so its been a few years.
No problem now, but it was a bit annoying as when they were trying to run it was locking up the computer. Thanks again, at least I understand what it was doing.
I did miss the 'Registry Clean' - I will run, may help some other issues. 2 years on this system and only check defrag occassionally - Vista.

Many of the little viruses that get picked up are handled by any of the decent anti-virus programs. Once in a while though a really vicious one may get in and even after removal with the anti-virus program it leaves traces around that cause performance issues. If you find yourself in one of those spots I highly reccomend a site called bleepingcomputer.com. Since everything is handled on line through their forum it is not instantaneous but it is very good. All registered agents are fully vetted and the service is free.
They have been touted by both Microsoft and PCWorld mag as a good operation.
Their instructions cleaned the "registry search" virus off mine and got rid of the "google redirect" on my wife's. In both cases the viruses got in past up to date "highly reccommended" anti-virus and neither one of us are sloppy about what sites or e-mails we go to.

Once in a while though a really vicious one may get in
and even after removal with the anti-virus program, it leaves traces around that cause performance issues. Number One thing to do when ridding your computer of viruses detected is
to go to your System Control Panel and turn System Restore OFF.
(You might as well leave Sys.Restore turned off, coz the dumb thing rarely works properly
except for helping viruses to reinstall upon the next re-boot!)
And that's why you turn System Restore OFF
--because many of the clever viruses place a re-install program, deep in the boot sector
and merely propagate again
after you think you've done a bang-up job cleansing your computer of the wretched thing/s
and you're well on your way to happiness!? :) -you're not.
Very often they'll reinstall when you boot up again, and you still have them.
Run this by any Techie people and they should echo this.
It's one of the first things we do when handling infections: Turn OFF System Restore.
.............................
The other thing is to get into your anti-virus program's Quarantine File/Virus Vault
and throw all quarantined items out!! DELETE.. unless they are important .dll files
Sometimes there's a HEAL option offered: try that first, but otherwise just dump them!
I've found that, despite being in Quarantine, identified nasty-items can still have minor effect on the system.

Recently I updated with McAfee the 2011 Total Protection for both of my computers. I have never heard of Microsoft Essentials prior to this post. After numerous tries, I uninstalled Mcafee, installed Microsoft Essentials, updated, scanned and then downloaded the control software without a hitch.
I feel just a little bit vulnerable without McAfee on my computer so I am taking it by your comments I did the right thing.
Does Microsoft Essentials take care of the following:?
virus protection
firewall
spam email
etc.
thanks for your response in advance and this has started off being an education for me.

Security Essentials handles all of that. Not quite as well as some others with the spam. I tested Security Essentials for several months. I felt it was pretty secure. I took Norton off of the Corporation President's computer. It found 22 viruses that Norton was missing.
I moved the entire Corporation to Security Essentials. I have not had to deal with a virus since. And I am the lucky guy that gets to take care of that stuff here. One of my hats says IT.
By the way, I don't use Security Essentials on my own computers. I like Avast better. Isn't that the way to stir the pot. I use a paid version but they do have a Free version also.

I'm watching this tread am surprised shop-bot hasn't weight in .This is pretty serious .
Its also happened to me on 3 computers hit by my daughter its spy ware .A company puts the spy ware on your computer then charges to remove it .I'm surprised the site is still running .I almost got hit yesterday by doing a search in Google .
They can beat software how they do it is you click yes to a security scan. What they do is disable anti virus . Put there spy ware in that say you have virus
This can't be true about shop bot site

Heard a story that goes...
When AVG and some of the other antivirus guys heard about MS Security Essentials, and what it could do
they realized it was the end of the line for them. :(
This is what Microsoft (and Apple) do.
They see clever aftermarket things popping up to the assistance of their operating systems
and eventually absorb those functions into their OS. ;)
When MS starts doing antivirus, all others are toast!
Malwarebytes and BitDefender will last awhile longer.....but...

Most commercial antivirus software might as well be classified as maleware... Removing it can sometimes be more difficult.
Back in my XP days I had AVG but it seemed to do more harm than good. Just about every program I ran would raise a false flag while the actual viruses would slip by eventually messing up AVG itself. I had better luck using free software such as Clamwin and Malewarebyte which actually did their job.
Since upgrading to windows 7 I haven't had any problems. A little bit of common sense also goes along way. Staying away from some of the shady things the internet has to offer and not clicking on links you do not trust will go a long way.
