View Full Version : Keyboard delay in Keypad mode.

I used to use the keypad mode to locate my corners for zero. By using the arrow keys I would move to the corner and when I released the key it would stop almost instantly. Since release 3.6.18 the delay has got progressively worse. With the current release the Bot will continue to move at least a full second after I release the key. I mentioned this to Ryan when I was in Memphis at the Vetric school and he did not seem to be aware of the problem. I reverted back to Rev 3.6.14 and the response is again very quick. I can tap the arrow key and have the axis move just a few thousands. Just an audible bump is heard. This is what I need. So I know it's not a comm issue. A one second delay is just not acceptable. Do I have to go back to Ver 3.6.14?
I have a 4G board with a USB to serial converter. I don't see how this can be a problem.
Anyone else see this kind of delay in response in the Keypad mode on their machine?

Hi Stan,
Yes I am experiencing a delay when using the keyboard to shift. I am not sure which version, but it should be the latest. I used to be able to locate the cutter to within a half mm, now about 3mm. It has not been critical to me to get it exactly dead on, but is rather annoying.

Roger.

If you look at the keypad dialog box, towards the middle right you see a red button labeled FIXED. Clicking on this will allow you to set the amount of movement when hitting any of the movement keys. I find this a very useful feature. Russ

I've been having keypad delay problems for awhile, but only noticable in the Z-axis. At some point, I started a thread about it, and in post #10, you'll find an interesting quote from Frank at ShopBot:

Live and learn. Will check that out tomorrow.
Thanks,
Roger.

I use the "fixed" mode all the time. It's the only workaround so far.
It is still very troubling to have the Bot move over a second after I release an arrow key when it used to stop immediately. When moving a bit up close to an edge or surface, it just continues to drive it into the piece. This really needs to be addressed.
I dont see how this can be a computer problem when it works with an older Rev. installed.

It must be related to computer system/OS somehow though as I, and others, don't get this problem with the later versions.

I have the same problem. And I am not Networked to your computer in any way, I promise.

If it is the OS, then it is because they are handling it differently in the control software. It worked before on the same computer. It still will if I want to go back to and old rev. That kind of defeats to purpose of trying to stay current.:(

This behaviour also occurring with older software too.
Recently we upgraded the software for our PRT-96
from ancient version 2.Whatever (using Win.98  )
to the new-er version 3.4.27 (using Win. XP)
and I've noticed that while jogging Y (maybe X too? -not sure)
that when I hit the space-bar for a dead stop, it doesn't!
It takes a second to slow down to a stop.
That's not what a spacebar hit is all about.
A spacebar hit is supposed to bring about an emergency/immediate stop
like what the red button still does, in all cases
Hasn't caused us any problems yet, but it's something I've noticed.
I am using the 3.21 older version software . It works fine or me and if it aint broke then it dont need fixin:eek: besides i am a bit slow myself

Stan,
I have helped several people with their machines, and the new software does this on most of them. Alpha and standard machines have done it for me.
I have taken them back to 3.6 18 when they are cabinet cutting, and 3.5.20 if they don't use the link.
When you have several fixes a month comming out there is some scary stuff going on.

My Machine also has this issue. I started out with SB #18 and now running the current version. Same thing thoughout updates...

I still had problems with 3.6.18. That is the ver it started for me. I loaded it again just to be sure. I had to go back to ver 3.6.14.
I just got through running some jobs with the old ver. It's nice when doing a fast move to have it stop when it gets close to the surface and not bore into it after you release the key and watch helplessly!

Has ShopBot acknowledged this as a problem? If more than a few are having the same problem, then it is just not my specific collection of hardware.
If, when you hit a spacebar or let up on an arrow key and the machine continues to move, this is a safety issue that should be addressed.
Safety issues should always take top priority!

Me too. Both machines. Perhaps it's time to hire a couple of barely out of diapers "whiz kids" like so many of the software producers and software dependent companies do? They're cheap and seem to have it in their genes - unlike old f**ts like me who count more on the wisdom to (hopefully) hand over some opportunity and responsibility and focus more on providing them guidance. There seems to be few things that motivate the kids these days but the one big exception seems to be writing "winning" programs/code... for good or bad ;)
