I just got done sending a message to a customer of mine that buys up a lot of my scraps. The couple run a small consignment shop and the husband makes wooden toys. Not thinking, I sold them a good amount of Jatoba or commonly known as Brazilian Cherry. They actually made some wood teethers out of it. I noticed their posting on facebook. Because of the oils in the wood i wouldn't suggest selling it made specifically for a baby to put in their mouths. They're big naturalists as far as products for people and children. I'm still kind of awestruck that they didn't make sure that the material they're using is safe for the application. Just a friendly heads up for everyone. Make sure when kids are involved you check everything out thoroughly.

Randy

jatoba is not oily. but it is very splintery and is not a good choice for such applications.

It does have oil, not like other woods that cause issues in the finishing process so you don't hear about it. Yes splintering is as issue as well.

I'm sure most of us know this but just in case it helps even one... many woods, are toxic and even carcinogenic. Maybe you could pass these links on to your friend and tell him there are many more such lists. http://www.mimf.com/archives/toxic.htm
