Kind of like watching grass grow though, isn't?

Dan - What a great piece, wow! Quick question, did you carve the outline or did you carve and then finish cut around the edges? I haven't had any luck doing that intricate of edgeing as you have accomplished, very cool! Russ

Dan,

very well done. That looks great. Approx what size and how long for the finish pass?

Again, well done,

Cheers,
Roger.

danhamm

The size is 32w 36h, the fini pass took 4hrs and a bit..there was .25 material left which I had bordered and cut out, the laminate was 2.65 in thick to start.

and Scott, new terminolgy...3/d patience...

i have that 3d frame but have yet to cut it. I am assuming that you used aspire to mix 2-3 wildlife scenes together? Is that correct?

cowboy1296
08-24-2011, 04:35 PM
My eyes are getting older and i cant quite make out the picture. Did you do a profile cut of your wildlife scene to taper the profile off?

jkaras2000
08-28-2011, 05:27 PM
Nicely Done Dan: I have Aspire with the Wildlife Series. Have not braved this one yet. Let me get this right, you started with 2.65 of material and ended with .25? Does the relief require that much depth of cut, or did you have to recut? Whatever the answer, it looks great. I know what you mean about learning patience. Sometimes the best thing to do is just walk away for a little bit. It will still be there when we get back. Joe

Sorry guys, but I don't have "aspire" I was Tony and Brians very first customer..the first paying customer..and since then Tony has been very good at free upgrades, so I have everything but aspire...

Did this one from a cedar plank 3 inches deep planed it to 2.5 and cut it..using Beckwith bits .25 and .0625 for fini. had to plane the edges down so the bit nut didn't hit..

Dan,
You're going gangbusters on these carvings. The pictures don't do justice to the actual size. If these are 30"x36" thats HUGE! I really like your first one and the finish. Good job!:D

Pinecone framed eagle wolf from 3in. slab of cedar, with one coat of minwax clear sealer applied..love the definition...

09-06-2011, 02:17 AM
Dan have you experienced any cupping with having cut a lot out of a 3" slab? How long did it take to cut?

danhamm
09-06-2011, 02:59 AM
Yes, I have experienced cupping...not with that piece as it was very dry cedar. I did one of not dry enough pine and it curled in 2 directions, it was a larger carving and even curled while it was being carved.
I have a couple of dry stacks one of cedar and one of fir, both are fairly inert.. the time about 12 hours with all the passes.

jack on a deeper carve (or wider) i cut a .2 +/_ recess in the back 1- 3 " from the edge, then flip it over and do my face carve,, a small relief goes a long way !

myxpykalix
09-06-2011, 06:36 PM
So a recess on the back of a carving of little less the quarter inch will help relieve the cupping janes....i'm glad i thought of that:eek::D

Thats a good tip James thanks!:)

danhamm

Yes, thanks, James...going to try it when I do the next larger piece.. got one coming up with half a soccer ball on it...scary...

Like I said before I certainly like the 3d artwork that you have made. maybe you can pass judgement on mine, which i do want to cut in the future but have not done so as of yet. parts of it i like but i do not care for the distance been the rustic framr and the rectangle elk scene. not sure how to blend them together without aspire, which i do not have.

anyhow any and all suggestions are welcome

I think I would be happier with the 3d frame if i could flatten, smooth or make smaller the branches that protrude into the interior of the frame. this way i could enlarge the elk scene, reducing the space between the frame and scene. if there is a way with partworks or pw3d to do this i am certainly not aware of it.

oh well its only money. i just bought aspire 3. this is an expensive hobby that i have.

since my last post i have upgraded to aspire 3.5. i recently bought an alder plank from perfect planks, 1 7/8 inch thick. here is the question, if i cut an elk scene in that plank that would end up 24x28, would the outcome be a little thin for a wall plaque of that size. if questionable i can alway downsize. the deer scene was added to make total use out of the plank.

Dan you seem to have a good grasp on these size plaques, what do you think?

thanks for any input?

Happy birthday Marine Corps.

in aspire you can select the model and use " scale Z hieght" to play with thickness

cowboy1296
11-10-2011, 12:05 PM
that part i knew, but i am still a rookie so thanks for the input. I will use as much of the 1 7/8 inch that i can. but when finished will the over all plaque come out a little thin for the dimension of 24x28. In Dans case he started out with a planned plank that was 2 1/2 inch thick but was cutting a bigger plaque. hopefully i got his info correct. after spending as much on the plank as i did i don't want any stupid mistakes.

thanks for your response.

Rick, I have one thats 34 in. out of 2 inch wood its just fine..
I dont know anything about aspire, but vetric products usually show
what you get very accurately...and you photo looks good so be prepared for a long day...and enjoy it...I still find it facinating...

very nice. i dont recognize the artwork, on the praying cowboy. if you dont mind where did you get it. i still have lots to learn but here are two that i recently did. the elk scene sold and the praying cowboy was a Christmas gift to the local Cowboy Church.

Rick,
Give me some details on how you did the finish on the elk scene? I love the contrast and the dark in the details, the other looks good too.:)

first off i am not sure that i qualify as knowing what i am doing. its somewhat of a glazing technique and simple. i use zinsslers universal sanding sealer which i dilute about 50/50 with denatured alcohol. i brushed on two coats on the raw piece. i used a black walnut gel stain and pretty much brushed it on the whole piece (in sections since it was so large) once brushed on i waited only a couple of minutes and then started wiping off with a rag. the wiping process does not effect the crevices. and naturally you have to sit back and make sure it blends right. i top coated it with the above 50/50 solution until i achieved the proper sheen for me. hope all of that made sense. and if any of you pros can set me straight on any mistakes i made, i am all ears.

Hey Joe, coming from you thats special...next month is my "70th." so I wonder if theres time left to get rich. aww heck im already rich...

Rick, Nice stuff..where did you get that praying cowboy piece from?
My wife picks up most of my stuff from vector clipart outfit in california.
thier not as clean and defined as "James" vector art3/d stuff but cheap
and if you want to play they come as "stl" files.

This one just landed, off the machine..

cowboy1296
02-04-2012, 04:30 PM
all of the files came from vector 3d. the cowboy, the horse, the mountains, the cross, and were blended together with aspire 3.5. these were all individual files. this was my first project with aspire 3.5 and what i did not know at the time was that i could extract a sky from another file and place it into this one so i just did a pocket cut with the wrong bit. thanks for the kind thoughts. every time i make something i figure out ways to do it better next time.

the elk scene was made from butcher block alder purchased from perfect planks. the praying cowboy is made from willow. i think that is a trash tree but it does make some some pretty wood.

i just recently found a local furniture maker who will make me 8/4 clean/fancy/no knots alder planks for what i think is a reasonable price. 4 are ordered and i look forward to putting out some new stuff.

danhamm
02-07-2012, 12:06 AM
Yes and no, I did with the idea, to let light through but didn't know what it would look like, My end purpose is to wrap some thin plywood around the edge and bond it..then put a back on with somekind of alumination inside for effect...seems like it should work out ok..
and thanks for your comment..

Dan,
Check out "cold cathode lighting"
http://www.xoxide.com/dual-white-cold-cathode-kit.html
its cheap and generates no heat and the average bulb lasts 30,000 hours. if placed properly does not have hot/cold spots as I have seen in some alternative light sources.
Was this poplar a finished kiln dried piece? Did you have any problem with fuzzies? Good job:D

danhamm
02-07-2012, 10:54 AM
I like carving Poplar, on 3/4 material i just use the finish no roughing with a slow first path...tha Fuzzies are mostly on the sharp slopes and sand easily.. hey thanks for that lead..thats what i was wanting...

More wall hangings, playing with cedar log rounds, finding what works best to stain or seal them...so far tongue oil seems the best for not raising the grain.
