Oil Rubbed Bronze
Has anyone ever treated solid brass with a solution to produce
an oil rubbed bronze finish?
Thanks for any advice

Hi Erminio,
I just did a Google search for "make brass look like bronze" and got a lot of hits. Have you tried that?

I did
Just was wondering if anyone has actually done it.
Any practical advice would be a plus.
This is for some brass rails for an office/library I've been working on.

That makes sense.
I have a significant amount of time invested in polishing brass with Brasso, but we were trying to make it look like gold :)

Not a bad idea!
Will they allow 12' brass tubing on a plane?
No time to drive!:)

Most of the acids (diluted) will patina the brass. Trick is to get the right mix 1st time. Once cleaned, used rubber gloves as your fingerprints will show up as the oil keeps the acid from working. (again, dont ask!)

Most commercial "oil rubbed bronze" look is actually paint. Getting brass to patina is one thing, getting it to look like bronze is another. When you buy brass fittings or tubing made for things like library ladders it has been clear coated to stop (or at least retard) the natural aging and patina that brass will develop. If you simply remove the coating as Gary suggests by fine sanding it, it will darken pretty quickly wherever there is some humidity. It won't look like bronze though. It will look like the color of an old trumpet or bugle.
If there is a chemical way to make brass look like bronze without painting it I would bet the folks at Sculpt Nouveau, as Ken suggests, will know it.

12' tube sounds like a bar rail,, i recently did a bar for an officers club that specified "oil rub bronze" and we ordered it from "keg works" it looks black when it arrives and is not cheap!!
client commented we coulda just painted it for what we ended up with,
