I have been searching on here for a program to generate a DXF file to draw some simple spur gears. I bought one (Gearotic Motion) I saw talked about on here during my search and can't get it to work for me. It maybe a bit advanced for me not being an engineer or cad expert.
I am trying to make a part that consists of a pair of circular arms that when closed form a ring and pivot with gear teeth that mesh so when one arm moves it opens the other arm. I know I can draw the arms easy enough and if I had the spur gears I could just edit the gear portion and pivot points to make my part. I just need the DXF file of the spur gears to work with. I have spent half the day trying to make this program I downloaded work but I just can't get it to do what I want I have drawn the gears but it is not letting me save it to a DXF. I am frustrated at this point and have asked for a refund of the program so I can buy something a little more intuitive. I am waiting to hear back from them.
I have Aspire but I do not see any gear generating tools in Aspire.

That is the problem I need the gears as a place to start I need to know the spacing of the 2 axles to start the part to get those holes I need to design a gear I am not sure how many teeth to use and so on for the diameter of the gear and then I need to know the clearance between teeth to properly space the axles. Once I have designed the gears I will draw all the parts and weld them together and do a little node editing so the part looks good.

I will probably buy that one if they refund me the $75 I have already spent it looks a little simpler to use.
Thanks Mike

Patrick,
It looks like that cad software is for buying the finished part from a shop does it allow exporting DXF files?
Bleeth,
Who is Ryan?

This is what I am trying to make the semi circles in the bottom of the part will be gear teeth. The exact placement of the semi circles and axle holes depending on gear arrangement.

Yep you can draw whatever you like and export it as a DXF. I love that program it is my go to CAD program.

Is this what you are looking for? Took about 3 minutes using GearGenerator.

If you have Inkscape under "Render", one of the options is "Gear"....
tell it how many teeth and the pitch....

I just came up with this I will make one from plastic to see how it works. It is a part for a new billet aluminum rod holder I have designed. The final part will be made from 1/2" 6061 t-6. It only has to rotate 20* on each part to give the same opening as the ring itself.

I can't get your file to open.

Michael, Have you talked to the program creator Art Fenerty on the Gearotic forum yet. He's the guy who created Mach3 and was very approachable there before he sold it. I assume he's ArtF on the forum.

I think Dave was talking about me. Here is a link to the page where you can download a version of GearMaker. http://www.cabinetpartspro.com/OtherProducts.aspx (http://www.cabinetpartspro.com/OtherProducts.aspx) It is a free program and will generate an involute tooth profile with an option to save as DXF. You will need to finish the Gear in a CAD program. If you have any questions send me an email.
