Does anyone have a toolpath for a rocking chair in the photo? It is 3/4" mdf.

Thank you. I have done a search on the ShopBot, Vectric and 100K Garages forums and came up with the same thing.

The chair is 6 pieces.

2 Rocking Sides
1 Seat
1 Back
1 Front Rail
1 Key

All pieces lock together.

I have an Apsire file I will post. I need to clean it up a bit, as I had a few changes. Give me a couple of days.

Bob - The first picture is what was brought to me and I was asked to remake it. I spend some time with my students making it. We traced it and then plotted the points. Cut it out, fixed some problems and the newest pictures were the 3rd test cut. I had to replace the back and the seat because I needed to adjust the tongue on the back, which was off.

3/4" MDF and 1/2" End Mill

3/4" MDF

1/2" Helical End Mill and then I used a round over bit on a small hand held router.

I have found the best way of cutting the back is to make a pocket, otherwise the small pieces come out.

Cut to the inside with a tab on the ovals on the chair sides.

Cut out the profile with 4 passes and use tabs.

To clarify, the CNC rocking chair is for a child.

Approximate Size

29" Tall, 15" Wide, 18" Long

Job assembled and ready for the customer. 14 sheets cut out - 2 chairs per sheet. Sheets came in at 9 AM on Thursday, finished by noon on Friday. Took me two more days to round over the 168 parts, both sides, finished on Tuesday. By Thursday, the customer had picked up the parts and delivered to a Special Ed art class in the Chicagoland area.

Painting was a sample by the teacher. Students painted skylines.

Originally the goal was to make 60 chairs, but they only had funding for 28. I plan on cutting them out locally for people. Buy one sheet of material, you keep a chair and you give a chair to this class.

Really nice. I wish EU regulations didn't make it virtually impossible for small scale makers like myself to do similiar over here but I suppose it's for the good of the children.

The jobs where the customer paints them are always the best!

I haven't really been following this, but there is a thread on the Vectric forum regarding a child's puzzle chair (http://www.vectric.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=16853&p=118484) - This would be a good exercise in 'reverse engineering' for those of you who want to sharpen their drawing & toolpathing skills. It is a fairly generic design, so the heart could be replaced with a star, a car, a flower etc, depending on what your little 'peep' is into...

No doubt the whole thing could be done in PartWorks, but some may find visualization of the joinery a little easier using a full 3D program like Rhino or Sketchup. This is not something that I personally have an interest in...but(!), if a few of you had an interest in making one, why not each take a part, draw it up & share your files as part of a joint effort of sorts? Just an idea...

Of course, you could also contact Greg and see if he is willing to share or sell his design.

I rebuilt the rocker from a picture, took about 25 minutes...WE purchased
a new laser to cut heavy materials and started making kids furniture..
SO I have a laser file, its the same as any cnc file..

I bought a keyland laser, a commercial plant up here has their Yag laser and love it so I went with them, its a 50x36 bed with feed through and 180 watt EFR tube and its amazing..

The Bot would be quite a lot faster probably at least 3 times Jack, but when the lasers done its finished no sanding or messing around, or hold downs needed and the edges are flame sealed http://www.talkshopbot.com/forum/images/icons/icon10.gif...

Does the black rub off?

The lasercut makes the resin in the wood become a sealer, clearcoats easy or if painting I use shellac..
