I'm looking for a 1/8" boring bit with a 1/4" shank. I'm going to use it to drill the peg holes in cribbage boards (mostly hard maple). I've got a PC router, and that's why I'd like to stay with the 1/4" shank.

I'm having a heck of a time finding anything. That's why I need your help finding these bits.

I'm currently using a 1/8" ball nose bit to drill my holes. It seems to work alright, but I was told a boring bit would be better suited for drilling the holes.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Try Toolstoday.com. They have Amana boring bits which I've been using in everything from melamine to bubinga.

I still am working with the original set of 5mm, 8mm, 10mm, 1/8" and 1/4". Love them. I spin them at 6K rpm with a plunge of 45 IPM. Perfect clean holes. Even through holes come out clean on the exit.

Eric...
Due to the higher rpm of your router you shouldnt use the boring machine bits. I also dont think that you could find a 10mm collet for the PC either.

Try Centurion Tools, they have both plunge end mills or drills with 1/4" shanks that will fit in the PC. I saw a 4mm, but not a 1/8", but I am sure if you give them a call, they can let you know what the best bit would be for your material and rpm combination.

I just use my 1/8" tapered ballnose - the taper pretty closely matches the taper on the pegs...

I've been using some 0.125" and 0.0625" up and down cut end mills from this guy on Ebay. http://stores.ebay.com/carbideplus They're inexpensive, sharp, and seem to last quite well. I've used the 0.125" upcuts for cribbage board holes with good clean results.

There is (or at least was) a 10mm collet for the Porter Cable. I got one several years ago on Amazon. A search brought up a few, but it looks like it's a discontinued item. RPM on the PC is an issue, but I ran a 5mm boring bit at the lowest setting with no problems. Peck drill with a fast retract.

You can also get a 1/8" collet for the PC from Precision Collets. It will be expensive to start because you have to have a new nut, wrench and collet. I wound up buying a 1/4" and 1/8". Now I wish I had bought a 1/2" as well. They work great ( and I have no need for a split sleeve to put over my 1/8" shank bits in 1/8, 1/16, and 1/32"... all of which I have actually used.)

Expect to invest about $90 to get set up, but you will like the collets and nuts very well, I promise!
