I am fairly new to the ins and outs of shopbotting and I am having a problem with v carving in Part Works 2.5. When I try to carve script lettering I end up with not cleaning out to a sharp v at the bottom of the letters. I am using a 60 degree v bit. To me it seems that the bit is cutting both edges of the letters but not going deep enough? This is driving me crazy
Thanks Lenny

Lenny,
A screen shot of your toolpath setup would be helpful or the file itself.
Could you possibly have "Flat Depth" checked with a limiting depth entered? Or possibly the tool parameters are not right in the tool database.

Lenny...
Check to see if the name of the bit matches the degrees set in the included angle.
are you carving wood?
if so, sounds like it is not flat on top, but dipping down.

Could it be that if I choose a 60 degree bit that is 1/2" from the menue but mine is 3/4" diameter ? Yes this is carving in wood. If I do have the wrong bit selected is there a way to calculate the bit I am using. Thanks again Guys Lenny

You should be able to make a tool profile of the bit you are using. I do not know the software you are using but the vectric software is able to do this. Just copy a tool that is close say a 1/2 60 v bit and change the dimensions in the fill in block and save it.

I remember when i first started, i assumed that you had to set the depth (hence flat depth) when v-carving and i was wrong. This will cause a rough looking flat bottom. leave the flat depth box unchecked. the program will determine the depth to be cut and give you a sharp v-bottom.
of course you tool data base has to be correct also. my 60 degree v-bit has a 1/2 shank not to be confused with the 1 inch diameter at it widest point bit.

I am using Part Works 2.5 and I am trying to v carve a script font using a 60 degree bit that has a 1/2" shank and a diameter of 1". I have tried this again and again and the bottom comes out rough almost like its not going deep enough. I dont have the flat area checked either. I also tried it with a 1/2" 90 degree bit and I got basicly the same results.
Thanks Lenny

The .crv would be useful too.

Leonard...
Post the PartWorks file (the .crv file) either here or on the Vectric forum. I am sure that someone can solve your problem.
