I have had this error and after a conversation with shopbot tech support I did a firmware update and it solved the problem.

Sorry your first attempt was anticlimactic. The things that seem obvious to me may not be to you, so...
I have a PRT alpha, not a desktop however most some things are likely similar.
1. Do you have an E-stop that perhaps got pushed in during setup? you have to manually reset it usually with a slight twist and a "pop out" action.
2. My control box has two buttons on the side. One "Resets" the control box when you first turn it on, and the other starts the router/spindle and is pushed when prompted by the software.
These two items are what the error message would suggest. double check them and let us know...

Steve,
My shopbot has no reset buttons available that I can see and the control box is enclose in plexiglass. No easy button available :( I am just stuck.
Nothing happens.

SB3 doesn't know that your machine is a desktop. Type in the UR command and hit enter 3 times to blow through the defaults. Find the desktop settings file under PRS Shopbots, select it and say OK. You should be up and running.
