I want to engraving some large calligraphy work like the image below. what kind of bit should i use? ( my fingers are at the bottom of the picture so you can see the scale of the engraving.) what's the general process for these kind of these kind of engraving? do i need to convert the calligraphy into gray scale for the concave carving?

with the rounded nature of the profile it will be a ball nose bit and 3d file

Looks like it's carved down (as stated, concave) into the wood. You can use a v-carve toolpath with either a 90º or 60º bit depending on the size of the project. If your artwork is good black and white, you can get a good trace in PartWorks, VCarve Pro, or Aspire. It the rounded bottom is desired, then a ballnose bit can be used, but the results may vary.

By the looks of the different woodgrain, I would say inlayed raised, the grain patterns and style looks as if it was hand carved then inlayed into
the piece....just my opine...!!
