I am going to be working on a commercial sign in about 2 weeks. The sign blank its self will be an oval approximately 36-48" wide. I plan on using MDO for the panel with a curved frame made from cedar. I have everything figured out for the most part, but right now I am thinking about installation.

As far as the installation is concerned the sign is getting installed on to a stucco wall. The building was built in the 60's so its real stucco. Codes and or zoning/permitting are non existent in this situation.

Right now I am planning on using either an aluminum Z clip, or a shop made french cleat, anchored to the stucco.

I will also install a piece of steel angle iron on the wall near the bottom of the sign I will then screw through that into an MDO backer strip to secure the sign.

The questions I have are what the main advantages may be of a Z clip vs an plywood french cleat.

And if anybody has any other suggestions, or words of wisdom about mounting similar work on stucco.

I have attached a drawing with a cross section showing what I am referring too.

Well I have since thought of a different way to accomplish this. I will post about it in about 3 weeks or so when it is done, and installed, along with details, and pictures of the sign.

Just curious as to why the space block an not directly into back of sign. New at mounting also, wondering what the advantage or did you want the added dimension.
