I just ordered a vacuum motor from Ward at Lighthouse, I like the "Brady Vac" and plan on making several as it looks like there may be lots of varied projects coming up. Just today a lady inquired about having me cut the label portion of 800 lp records hmmm... Anyway I digress, Ward at Lighthouse told me that to use the vacuum the way I planned to, that is the way I think I understand Brady's way, that I will need to have a 1/4" hole open at all times so that the motor doesn't burn up. Am I missing something about Brady's Vac? I don't recall reading anything like that in any of the vacuum threads/posts. Any clarification would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

You should do what Ward suggests in order to keep the motor cool and your warranty in effect. Many guys burnt up motors because there wasn't enough leakage to cool the motor. You'll be fine even with the cooling hole.
I would put an 1/8" brass or iron nipple and a filter on the end to keep debris out of the motor by means of that 1/4" hole.

Thanks Brady, you are the Man. Where do I place the hole with filter: edgewise or from the top? If from the top won't it be blocked by the object I'm cutting. What do you guys do? If edgewise how far in, likewise from the top, how far down? Why I haven't seen this mentioned before?
Thanks and have a happy Thanksgiving everyone

One quick suggestion, I recently purchased the lighthouse motors and I really enjoy them, but be careful when mounting them. I tightened mine down pretty tight for the purpose of keeping them from loosening under vibration. Bad idea, because after running them for a few minutes the impeller would expand and start rubbing against the housing, while making a horrible sound with smoke . So just mount them snug with some loctite.

The hole should be placed between the motor and the table. You should have a big canister filter on the motor to catch any debris between the vac & table as well. They don't last when they get chips & dust in them.
