I was having problems depth of cut on my PRT Alpha. It would be off, up or down, just a bit. I disconnected the cable to the motor and discovered that I could barely move the Z axis by hand and the movement was very "rough". I spent a couple of hours cleaning the pinion, rack, rails and V bearings. The pinion still looks good and there is no vertical play. I also applied a bit of white lithium grease on the pinion and rack.

I can now move the z axis up and down easily and it is as smooth as a baby's behind. Z depth cuts are no longer "random".

Lesson - clean the Z assembly move often than once every six years!
