View Full Version : Hookah
Looking back on this job, I now wish I'd included a Magic Carpet. That would give the sign a more romantic look. In the back of my mind there was the Ali Babba image. This was my first attempt at a Hooka Bar sign. It was lots of fun.
Most of it was made from PVC and MDO. The core was cedar.

When you mentioned that, the very first image that popped into my head was to have a hookah with smoke coming out of it in the form of a genie coming out of a bottle ala "Aladdin"
"and iXnay on wishing for more wishes":D
Jack,
Our own Walt Disney showed us the power of fantasy. One thing for sure, he never worried about a budget when dreaming up an image. Once the concept has been agreed on, then came the question of how to make it happen.
There's nothing wrong with getting assistance. For example, if a person is a little short with cartoon images or western scenes, there are plenty of good artists just itchin to help. There are hundreds of online graphic images available.

As usual, just another fantastic design from the master. Congratulations, Joe.

how much did you charge for that sign and how many hours did it take to make?
What is a hookah bar ? is it where u find hookas ? i thought that was only legal in nevada.

A Hookah bar is where guys go to see Hoochie Koochie dancers, drink wine and smoke.
I looked back over my posts when starting this project and it was fun getting all creative suggestions. Wish I had another one of these to do. It was good fun putting it all together.
I'm estimate 16 hours is about what it would take to make this sign. Once again, this was a series of pieces. Each one being painted seperately. I did a critique of this sign at Wayne Lock's camp. Here's the gist of that. My design doesn't come together very well. It seems like three individual stages. Consequently the eye doesn't move up and down easily. It's a violation of one element of design: Dominance. There's not one dominant area for the eye to start. I should have featured the water pipe. Then everything else would fall in place.
I think it retailed out at $1,600.

You are your own worse critic, Joe, and that's how we all should be. However, you can say what you will and trash it till the cows come home,....I think it's fabulous! :)
To me, the name of the establishment should always take precedence and all the rest is glitter. I think you accomplished that marvelously. It's a beautiful and fun sign!
I'm flattered Mark but just imagine a huge Hookah with a dozen or more colored hoses, looking like an octipus. And the whole thing setting on the letters Hookah. I doubt I'll ever get this chance again. But it's sure lots of fun rolling it over in the mind. I wonder what my hero, W. Disney would do?

Joe, Walt would have seen what you've done and said: "Hey Joe, can you design and build something along the same lines for my latest Walt Disney World amusement park? Money is no object, Joe. How soon can you get started?"
That's what Walt would do. Trust me.
