Hmm - I'm thinking of buying a cheap solid body to try something like this on!

There was a post on here recently for some free gituar body dxfs somewhere, why don't you start from scratch? Unless you can find it real cheap that might be an option.

Bruce - I thought so too. The poster is a great handcarver - To get it close to as good as he did, I'll have to go back to my chisels for the undercuts and fine line detail.
Jack - I can buy a cheap complete one for under $100 - way cheaper than cutting one and buying all the parts! Think "proof of concept!" If I get it right, then I might start one from scratch!

yeah that makes sense. Knowing NOTHING about gituars, most look like they have a plastic laminate on the body of certain models or am i mistaken?

Ron,
I would keep an eye on Musicians Friend. They do lots of sales and closeouts. I bought a close-out Dean from them about 2 years ago for $99 with free shipping. The body was made out of something called Paulownia - very light and strong. Still haven't carved it up but I working on a file...
