Morning everyone!
First post on this site and have a challenge for you already.
Problem laying out a design on an upside down sphere. (Wider at top - like a martini glass) I am trying to place a stencil on a sphere and it becomes distorted due to the shape. A straight line or design will fold upwards forming a cup shape rather than remain straight as designed.
Any suggestions or formulas to eliminate the problem?
Have a good day!

Hello Steve C
And welcome to the forum! What software are you using? A screen shot will go a long way toward getting the right person to help!

Back at you Steve!
Thanks for the quick response.
Been using Corel Draw since 3.0 - currently 12.0 Don't see enough reasons to upgrade at this time.
About to leave and will be gone all day.

Corel 3.0 is about when I stopped using it...I still haven't got it straight in my mind if this is a 2D or a 3D issue. "Sphere" tells me 3D but I wasn't aware that Corel was a 3D design program...
Anyone else?

Steve,
Creating the layout for spherical or domed objects is simple in Corel, you create the layout as normal and then use the envelope tools to distort it to the shape of your dome, or if it's a perfect sphere you can use the fish-eye lens tool to distort the shape.
Problem is you are still cutting the stencil from a flat sheet and it's not going to conform to the dome shape no matter how it is laid out.
Steve G., no CorelDraw is not a 3D program, you can do some 3D effects that only appear dimensional, the objects you create cannot be moved in a true 3D space.

I think you understand the problem!
In the past, I've applied a stencil onto the sphere and used a jig to draw a line by rotating the sphere & stencil. Once drawn, I then scan it and then import into my design and then distort the artwork to conform to the arch caused by applying a 2D stencil onto a 3D object.
Not perfect, but it worked. Now, Looking for a better solution to the problem.
Thanks

Aspire or ArtCAM Pro have the ability to create a dome in 3D, and then you can project 2D artwork upon it. You also have the capability to do vector distortion in both of these programs as well.
