Hi all..
I was wondering if anyone is currently using a phase converter on there
shopbot to power their spindle? The machine I have has a 5 hp.3 phase
spindle, and I may be moving to temp. home with only single phase power.
My questions are .
1. will the phase converter effect the computer or info
being sent or received ?
2. Is there a particular brand or type that would be better?
3. size? the info i have read seems to be dbl. your hp. in my
case say 10hp.
4. Are there any special considerations as far as wiring or operating
them?
Any other input on this subject would be much appreciated
Thanks in advance

Buster...
First dont use a phase converter... Use an oversized VFD instead. Usually, the only difference between a single phase and 3 phase setup is the size (and cost) of the larger VFD. All spindles are 3 phase.
1) no (I am referring to the VFD)
2) If you get the Yaskawa or Delta your RPM controller will operate properly (which is a plus with the ATC)
3) The required ratio is around 1.8 x spindle HP. 10 hp will do just fine.
4) As long as the VFD has been programmed for the spindle and the voltage is proper, it will be a plug and play (with wire connections) operation.
Make sure that you buy from someone with proper programming knowledge, and wire properly. Give ShopBot a call, they may have one AND they can program it for your spindle. Since they sell the 5hp HSD with a single phase option, they will also have an OEM wiring digram that ensures that proper connections are made in the control box.

I have a 20hp phase convertor to run my spindle has run flawless since 06 and another 40hp that runs my vacuum table plus the rest of the shop turn em both on and go to work alot of times I'll run the shopbot and the moulder and three dust collectors off the two convertors and have never had problems with any of it

Hi Gary,
Good advice as always ,I thought about getting touch with you, hope all
is well.It looks like i will be starting a new project in about 2 weeks or so and
not sure about the shop space yet but trying to prepare now. Any idea of cost
of a VFD and is it something that could be switched back and forth or is this a bad idea?I am still trying to figure out this moving around business out.
Thanks again
