Gary Beckwith call asking if he could hire me to assist with a commercial panel. Of course I'd be happy to assist. This morning 9:00am, armed with a hot cup of coffee, I got the first look at his excellent designed panel. It was a beauty carved into 20lb Duna. We agreed this may take a few days but first we needed to choose a color scheme.

The next thing I noticed we were half way done. Over a hamburger lunch I told him there was a chance to finishing her up today. Since he had cut seperate panels and letters, we could paint one piece while the others were drying. Gary thought his client would like to have the lettering in gold. I pulled down my Modern Masters Gold and showed him how I apply it with sponge.

It was a down right fun day. Can't wait to see it once installed.

Looks like he got a private lesson in signmaking and it looks like he got an A+:D

I hope the teacher got an Apple....(and i don't mean an Ipod!):)
Good job guys.

You're right. An amazing example of design. This is an example of MASTERY, something far beyond skills alone.

Very impressive gentlemen! Thank you for sharing how high the bar can be set!

Well its always a hoot when I get to spend a day with my good friend Joe, we get to running our gums and before you know it the day is over.
I don't do signs but as this project was in part due to another I agreed.
After talking to Joe I solicited his help to do the finish, especially since I have no color coordination

Its always an experience to watch Joe's creative juices flow........first one one way and then the other until he see's the punch he's looking for in the final finish. I think everyone would agree he found it once again with this project. (not to mention making me look good ;))
Joe is one of the exceptional craftsman out there but of course I don't need to tell you guys that either.

thanks Joe

Even Joe's shirt has a cool font.... I would suppose if the second photo could talk we would hear "Gary, you work on the edges and the back... and I'll work on the other parts....:):):)

Curtis,

If you look at the first photo, look how neat it all looked. After Gary finished up with the textured background, paint started flying. We painted the sign Yellow Ocre but didn't like it. Next we moved on to a dark Moss Green. The paint wasn't given enough time to dry before more coats were applied.

This kind of work works well if you have lots of individual pieces to paint. Gary and I were talking this morning. We agreed he could have done the lettering with a round over bit and element the 3D. I still use 3D on some of my backgrounds but it's not a major part of my work. If it's a toss up I'll do my stuff by hand. It makes me feel good.

Gary hates painting but I could tell he was getting into the process. I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't sneak out to the shop, late at night when no one was watching, and try out a few new brush techniques.

Joe, It all looks great to me... for some reason whenever I paint anything it begins to look like a Sunday cartoon.

Still waiting for you to write your book... "It isn't finished until it's FINISHED."

Good job for both of you guys. Joe is a master and keeps thinking about new ways of doing things. Color can make or break a design and it's obvious that Joe knows how to put the right combination together.

Wonder how much he got paid?

One thing I noticed that is different there than at my shop - there is no paint on either of those guys.

I especially like the 'child development center' sign in the background of the third pic. I need one of those for my shop:)
