Can anyone suggest a good book on creating signs? I am not looking for a quick how-to but something going in depth explaining the art of sign making. Thank you.

I know of a bunch of books and magazine publications, but its not an all in one. They have many each specific to a component of signmaking. I will look some up if I can find them and post it. I have also seen them on Ebay.

Check the local library for "Sign Carving" by Garrit D. Lydecker. It's now out of print. I was so impressed by the amount of information on design and layout that I purchased a used copy to keep. One of my better investments ($10). :D

I just bought two of them, got them in the mail today.
"Mastering Layout" by Mike Stevens and "making Wood Signs" by Patrick Spielman.
Both should be interesting reads from just flipping through them before I made supper. I am no sign maker, and I dont plan to get into the sign business... but I would like to make some here and there for friends, businesses I know, etc.
Books are relatively cheap and always a good reference.

High Relief Wood Wood Carving, by William Schnute.

I have had the opportunity to have the author, as a teacher. Get a copy while you can. Not only is he a sign maker, but he has done some really mind blowing, architectural carvings. The book is a bit dated, in terms of finishing methods, and to some degree technique, but it is a good read.
