Thumbnail images verses images

I have noticed that some threads have a large image included in the messages rather than the small thumbnail links.

How is this done?

Pretty sure it's attachment vs linked photo such as one hosted on PhotoBucket or Flickr etc.

the thumbnails are done via "manage attachments" below

i tried the paperclip icon above but that wasn't it

under manage attachments in the box i think you click "Upload File from a URL" but i'm pretty sure those that upload into the message area are probably uploading a pic from their computer?
