ideas on lighting this sign

What LED's would you use to light a sign like this with standoff letters? the smaller letters are 4"x5" and about .71" wide.
I am playing around with sample idea's I was thinking of using letters like this with standoffs clear acrylic and using letter outlines with edge lighting would look cool. though in the light it may not work right. maybe paint the acrylic then cut it and edge light it. So just around the letters glow.

How about led around the raised letters... (in the center of each letter)...

embed it the backside of the letters pointed at the wall. cerates a soft glow all around the letter... I'll look for an example

here is one idea. color choices are not great but it was what was handy. I need to block the light that comes from the edge too but this looks pretty cool I think.
