Sometimes we all get caught up in "3D carving", or "relief carving" on our machines and think that we're really "artists". Then you see someone like this come along and understand how far we still have to go:

I showed this to my wife, the big reader...

First thing she said: "Doesn't he read?"

...so I said: Not any more!

Bill,
I have been carving (several styles with both chisels and knives) since I was a kid. For me, it is the purest form of art I am capable of. Taking a block of wood, and turning it into a figure, an animal, etc.

Machining stuff is very neat, and it is amazing what machines are capable of. But, what someone talented can do with a sharp knife, and a block of wood still amazes me more. :) And, that is something not everyone can obtain, no matter what amount of $$ you have.

That being said I dont want to give back my carving tools, or my Shopbot! :D

You would be amazed at all the beautiful works of art that is hiding inside a block of wood or slab of marble.
What i can't figure out is how mother nature is able to hide that statue inside the wood like that?

Woodcarving 101

Q: How do you carve a horse?
A: Carve away everything that doesn't look like a horse.

Q: What if I accidentally carve away something that does look like a horse?
A: Then carve away everything that doesn't look like a slightly smaller horse. :D

the artwork in a shopbot is in getting the thing drawn out and getting the machine to do what you need rather then the end result.
those boos are way cool.
