I have had several not turn on when I start the machine in the morning. with a flick they will go again and give me time for a replacement. I get maybe two years from a fan. well till this last one (several months) as the cut was finishing I smelled the nice fragrant burned electronics odor. took me a bit to locate it it was the cooling fan. that could have been a very big problem if it happened earlier. I have a quick change plug I attach to the fan wires to make life easier it's still a pain to change it on the HSD spindle but that helps.

Hi Steve,
I've just acquired my first "spindle" Shopbot so wondering if you could tell me if this is something I should expect from time to time as normal wear and tear like the bearings are on the PC routers? Is it the fan motors that typically go first? Is this a reality with all of the HSD spindles, 2.2, 4 HP etc. Mine is a 4 HP.

I'm on my fourth one since '07. :( Need a pull cord to get the current one started again.

Guys,
I got a 4HP HSD eary this year... I have never had to replace a fan. Should I buy one and have it on the shelf? I run in an un-conditioned space that was about 105 degrees yesterday. It wasn't that hot outside, but the heat builds up in the building. I am concerned about my computer and controller getting too hot, also- so I insulated the wall behind them, and keep a fan pointed in that general direction. I would get seriously behind if I needed a job done and had my machine down for 3-5 days to get a part and figure out how to install it.
Is this spindle fan something best bought through ShopBot? And is it universal for the HSD spindles?
Is the fan difficult to replace? I can't imagine that it is TOO tough. Does the spindle have to come off to get to the connectors, because the fan is obviously on top of the spindle... but connections could be significantly internal...
Thanks in advance.

It wouldn't hurt to have one on hand. They are easy enough to replace. They may or may not have a connector on them, but if it does, you'll have to cut it off and wire it in as needed. A quick connect that can be reused would be a good idea.
Unless they have changed the design, you just take the connector off the outside of the fan housing and remove the fan/housing from the top of the spindle.
Here's where I got my last one. They have the best price that I've seen.

Thanks Scott.
Just a regular muffin fan? I guess I thought it would be something specific to the HSD line!
It would be excellent if HSD has them on a standard quick connect.

Yes but it is 24 volt not 12 volt

Scott,
Does this fan work on the 2.2hp spindle? If so, I'm going to get a couple of them as spares. Thanks!

This is my fourth too but the only one to burn up. that's what scared me the most.
spares are a great idea though usually you can get the fan started manually.

Don,
I'm not sure about that. I have the 4hp HSD. Maybe someone here that has a 2.2hp one can confirm/deny that the fan housing is the same size.
