View Full Version : Best way to Build this Sign

This is a sign I did a few months ago. There is 2 signs front and back with 3/4” plywood between the 2. I used silicone to glue the plywood to the HDU 1 1/2” .
The next pictures show the top of the sign coming apart. I didn’t do the top and don’t know what they used to fill the top in.
What is the best way to put these signs back to back with plywood in-between? And what should be used for the top of the sign?

I think at this stage of the game... I'd be tempted to trowel on a fibered white roofing cement.

Thanks Steve for your reply. The bad part about this job, they want the sign replaced and will not let us take the sign down to fix it and on top of that they want the sign painted a different color. This job was subbed to me, I was thinking of using 2” foam for each side and glue the sides to each other and not using the plywood. That way I could just paint and install.
Thanks

First thing .....they only get a repair. Not a color change.
Now they will try to find any tiny faults in it.
You already lost them as a future customer.
Make the on site repair, smile at them and say thank you!
Let us know what happens.

Jim:
If you did not do the cap and basically another company had the whole job and hired you to simply supply the sign then they should be talking to the people they hired and not you.
It sounds to me, unless I am not understanding what you wrote, like what they are asking you to is take responsibility for someone elses work that you did not supply, supervise, or control.
You actually don't owe them anything and taking on someone elses responsibility will only get you in troble unless you make it very clear (as in have them actually sign off on a work order) that you will repair and or replace the sign for whatever you feel is appropriate to charge. They can then either go after the actual contractor for back charges if they wish or file a BBB complaint against him or whatever, but you are in the clear. If you do "free" work on it now without a clear understanding in writing that this is not your legal responsibility they will end up making you own the whole job.

I agree with Dave in every aspect! If you end up repairing it I would just cap the top with some 1/2" azek using stainless steel screws and call it done.

Thanks Dave for the advice, I’m doing this for another sign company and they are doing all the talking. I am redoing the complete sign all over again and this time I’ll do the painting and capping of the sign.
Kurt, Thanks for your help also. The Azek is that a type of PVC? I was thinking of using foam for the cap. I think I would be able to sand it down so you couldn’t see a seam. What do you guys think?

On the pure technical end Jim I would use MDO in the center between the two layers of HDU. This is something I learned from Professor Crumley and no way would I not take his advice!! For the cap you can heat and bend PVC pretty easy. If the cap is still to be white you don't even have to paint it.
On the "good relations" end I would get paid for all my work but if the other guys are good clients I would give them a bit of a discount. That let them know I am on their side but they should take responsibility for their own screwups. I would also advise them that the only thing I think they owe the client is a new cap.
All above is based on information shared so far!!
(Azek is a trade name for PVC architectural moldings and decking-I would guess he means get a piece of it from the local lumber supplier and use that-I would agree)

Dave, Thanks again for all the great info!! I am going with 1 1/2” HDU for the signs and MDO in the center. I do agree with you on the cap, meaning just replacing it, but, they want the hole sign redone and painted a new color. The sign company I'm dealing with is very good people and I'm giving them a brake on the cost.
Again Thank You Sir

You're welcome Jimmy:
Good advice is like the Solar System: It just keeps going around! When I bought my Bot I knew absolutely nothing about how to do this kind of work and now that I have had it all these years I figure I still have a whole lot more to learn than I know.
